I see it all the time in the cannabis industry: Great people stretched way too thin. The harsh truth is, most cannabis companies aren’t making enough money and it’s bubbling into a staff problem. They can’t afford to hire specialized staff. They can’t afford someone that is an expert in the marketing platforms they use. So, all those separate technical responsibilities get boxed together and dumped on a single person. And think about it: How many dispensary managers are also running marketing campaigns, expected to know all the growth hacks for IG, expected to create all forms of content and be an excel data nerd making sense of spreadsheets? Oh, and not to mention handle technical website adjustments and vendor coordination. It's a recipe for burnout, and it holds the entire industry back. Everyone ends up a mediocre generalist. Everyone is overloaded and overworked. Everyone’s focus is split in 10 different ways because they’re wearing 10 different hats at once. I get it – I was stuck in that cycle for years. I was juggling multiple businesses and spreading myself too thin. Then I specialized and went all-in on cannabis dispensary retention, and it was the single best decision I ever made. My revenue increased tenfold, and I went from having 4 clients to 19 within a few months. All because my team and I had a clear target and said “no” to handling anything else that fell outside of that scope. We have focus. For all rising cannabis professionals… Don't wait for opportunity Create your own opportunity. Look around you. 🪙 I bet you'll find little things that are frustrating you and your colleagues. 🪙 I bet you'll find some good ideas that could help the business and wouldn't be too hard to execute on. 🪙 I'll also bet there might be a manager or director that's overwhelmed and has too much going on. Those are opportunities. My first job in cannabis was at a rapidly growing, vertically integrated operation. Whatever was given to me, I made sure I excelled at it. Customer service. Product knowledge. Technology. Soon I was given the opportunity to build a small team for an event in the field. In between patients or when I sat at a security desk, I was constantly researching and studying and sharing my learnings. Next, they asked me to rewrite the patient guide. We were also breaking ground on a new adult consumption dispensary. So that led to me writing the first adult consumption guide, as required by the regulations. This all happened in the first several months. Soon I was finding minutes to write proposals for marketing and outreach campaigns to bring in new business. Then I was promoted. Don't get me wrong. Some people didn't like the opportunities I created for myself. I would later learn some people spread rumors and even formed little cliques. Be aware. These things happen. 🔥 Keep steady and focus on learning 🔥 Take it seriously 🔥 Seek ways to help management and the business 🔥 When you have ideas, write them down 🔥 Create presentable reports, SOPs, and ideas to grow the business 🔥 Follow your instincts, don't be afraid to look for new job opportunities It's extra work. It's outside your job description. But I promise you, no one else has a job description that mentions guaranteeing you the opportunity to move up and grow. If you want an extraordinary career, you have to do extraordinary things. Take care of yourself, your health, and your personal life. That charges your battery. Go above and beyond. One of the coolest parts of this job? Having your finger on the pulse of industry trends and disruptions. My most recent favorite? #Cannabis So what is going on? Most states have some sort of decriminalization and/or legalization at some level. FDA and DEA are looking to reschedule cannabis as a whole. Now the fun part, the cannabis brands are off to the races to build brand names like we all know in the liquor industry. It's essentially like being a consumer in post-prohibition era. Now the not so fun part, because of the culture or stigma around the industry, access to #consumerinsights has been.....inconsistent. Here is what needs to happen if you're building a cannabis brand: -> Get consumer research on your overall business road map. Understand where and what consumers want, why they want it and where you come in -> Work on long-term brand building efforts. Getting ahead of the curve, your brand can capture loyalists early in the arms race -> Additionally, new cannabis consumers say they make purchases based on recommendations from friends or stroke clerks (budtenders if you will?) -> Education is key. Instead of "selling" new consumers on your product, educate them on why yours is the best. Outside recommendations, consumers said that quality checks where important.

Employees in the Cannabis Industry need to be prepared properly for their roles, including understanding job descriptions, Cannabis rules and regulations that relate to the license operation, standard operating procedures connected with their roles and responsibilities.
