Many Finnish organizations focused on ecology, wildlife conservation, and tourism tend to work exclusively with local photographers. This decision often stems from several important factors that deserve attention. Firstly, Finnish companies place a high value on a cultural understanding of the country’s natural landscapes, which they believe local photographers capture more deeply and accurately. Capturing the nuances of Finland’s nature—its unique features that attract tourists and convey Finland’s ecological heritage—is no easy feat if one has not grown up immersed in this culture and its traditions. Local photographers are seen as the best guides who can portray the beauty of nature with respect and an understanding of local specifics. Secondly, Finnish companies are accustomed to working with trusted professionals, especially in the niche area of wildlife photography, where trust and long-term relationships play a key role. This makes the wildlife photography market closed to newcomers and even more closed to those who have come from abroad without extensive local networks. Finally, when it comes to large-scale nature advertising projects or significant environmental initiatives, Finnish companies often turn to big agencies that already have experience in Finland and are familiar with the country’s natural environments. This limits opportunities for independent photographers, especially foreigners who may offer an equally interesting and valuable perspective on wildlife. These challenges highlight the importance of persistence, the ability to build strong professional relationships, and a deep understanding of Finnish nature. TELLING STORIES: THREE DEADLY AUSTRALIANS When I photograph any wildlife species, I like to record it in portraits, whole bodies, side-ons, and from above. I shoot wider shots and sometimes even aerial views where the species relates to its habitat. LEFT: The inland taipan, the fierce snake, is cited as the world’s deadliest snake. 📸 Last week’s wildlife photography shoot was absolutely thrilling, and I’m already counting down the days until I can immerse myself in nature again! There’s something deeply captivating about observing wildlife up close, especially the brilliant European Greenfinch. These birds are mesmerizing, with their vibrant colors and lively personalities—it’s impossible not to be drawn to them. European Greenfinches are not only beautiful but fascinating creatures. Here are a few interesting facts about them: 📍The males have that striking green-yellow hue, which not only makes them visually stunning but also serves as a form of camouflage amid green foliage. Their colors help them blend in with leaves and branches, keeping them safe from predators. 📍Greenfinches have a powerful beak designed specifically for cracking seeds. They’re especially known for their fondness for sunflower and other oil-rich seeds, making them regulars at garden feeders during colder months. 📍Males perform a unique “butterfly flight” to attract mates, singing a beautiful, whirring song as they flutter in mid-air. It’s a sight to see and hear—aerial acrobatics with a musical twist! Hope everyone’s having a wonderful Monday evening. A busy weekend dealing with home stuff meant little opportunity for wildlife photography. So, instead I took a stripped down kit and a packet of sandwiches to the office today with the aim of concentrating on insect photography at lunchtime. I only had twenty minutes or so, but the two ponds at the Met Office provided a good opportunity as the fringing vegetation was thronging with newly-emerged Azure Damselflies. Like electric-blue darning needles, these insects are normally flighty, but with today's weather being a little more overcast my impression was that they were allowing me a slightly closer approach than they would normally. The cloud also made the natural light less harsh, which meant I didn't need to use fill-flash to soften direct sunlight. I have many more images to process, but this one caught my eye as I like the composition with the blade of grass drawing the eye onto the subject. The Azure Damselfly can be found across most of Britain - south of the Central Belt in Scotland - and across Ireland. Look for it in most areas with ponds or other freshwater habitats. There are several similar but rarer species, but the Azure Damselfly is a good species for any dragonfly enthusiast to begin with as identifying this common and widespread species allows you to spot something rarer when the opportunity arises. I find the Canon R7 with Canon 55-250mm lens is a good dragonfly and butterfly combination, but for smaller species I might try using one of my extension tubes to provide closer focus and more frame-filling shots. #WildlifePhotography #Dragonfly #Damselfly #Devon #Wildlife #MacroPhotography #CanonR7
