Earlier this week, WSP President & CEO Paul Allen, alongside VP of Operations, Julia Hoskins, attended a special ceremony for the Nashville Business Journal's C-Suite Awards, celebrating our very own Heather Beckwith, Chief Operating Officer! Per the NBJ, "The new C-Suite Awards will shine a spotlight on those executives who support the region's CEOs. These influential senior managers are key decisionmakers in our business community and essential players in the health of our local economy. They each bring a wealth of experience and leadership skills to the table." The 2024 Nashville Business Journal C-Suite Award reviewed local businesses that were nominated through public nominations. Nominees were asked to submit completed questionnaires, which were reviewed and scored by an independent panel of judges. To be considered the company must be headquartered or have major operations in the 10-county Nashville area that includes Cheatham, Davidson, Dickson, Maury, Montgomery, Robertson, Rutherford, Sumner, Williamson and Wilson counties. Judges selected honorees based on outstanding performance for their companies as shown in the information submitted. Of all the companies considered, 25 were recognized and the honorees were announced on September 10, 2024. CEO of the Year? What's your organization's motivation for pursuing industry awards and accolades? Is it a genuine desire to celebrate excellence and have your hard work recognized by respected authorities? Or is it a superficial ego-stroking exercise driven by insecurity and the craving for external validation? If you find yourself perpetually entering competitions where being "nominated" simply requires cutting a check, it may be time to take a hard look in the existential mirror. Pay-to-play awards systems represent a troubling ethical erosion eating away at the core of what professional recognition is truly about. The notion of earned prestige through measurable impact and contributions to one's field is a powerful motivating force. It inspires people to find purposeful work that adds value to their organizations and society. But that's not what these business award "opportunities" by conference organizers and business publications soliciting $499.99 in fees in exchange for bogus "Maverick of Operational Excellence" honorifics or nonsense CEO interviews are peddling. Instead, they commodify something that should be reserved as an aspirational ideal - transforming prestigious distinctions into mere tchotchkes to be purchased by those willing to pay. It turns an entire industry into a soulless grift. What's being awarded here isn't excellence, but the ability to cut fat checks from the company's marketing budget. That's it. Imagine working tirelessly for years, conducting groundbreaking research that pushes boundaries, only to be passed over for recognition by someone who simply money-whipped their way to an award? How demotivating and demoralizing for those who actually earned it through disciplined value creation. At their core, pay-to-play awards are the antithesis of true leadership. Real leaders don't need hollow ego-stroking purchases of plastic idols that signify nothing. Real leaders find purpose and fulfillment in the hard work itself - in charting principled paths toward measurable progress. This isn't to say there's no place for rigorous, ethically-structured award programs that truly recognize excellence through demanding criteria, conflict-free governance and financial transparency. The problem is that these increasingly represent a tiny fraction of the awards ecosystem today. An entire industry built to honor true leadership and innovation has sold its soul to dodgy Internet popups promising you the meaningless title of Supreme Allied Strategic Visioneer. Ultimately, we must ask ourselves what values are driving pay-to-play popularity. Emptiness, vanity, misplaced priorities and mass delusion rather than any true desire to be called to a productive higher ground. Real leaders must reject the paper crowns being mass-mailed as a shortcut to credibility. Not to prove yourself as counter-cultural, but because it's the only path that provides the intrinsic motivation required to achieve something genuinely noteworthy.
