Our latest report “The scale-up gap: financial market constraints holding back innovative firms in the European Union”, sheds light on European scale-up companies and the future of Europe’s innovation. European scale-ups are highly productive companies, with the potential to become the big champions of tomorrow. But as scale-ups prepare to expand beyond their local markets and establish themselves internationally, they encounter obstacles. This hinders Europe's ability to remain technologically competitive on a global scale, particularly in innovative areas like greentech, AI, and quantum computing. The EU is attractive for foreign venture capital, but European companies raise only half as much capital as their Silicon Valley peers. They often rely on foreign investors and face a higher likelihood of being acquired by non-EU companies. This trend threatens the next generation of European start-ups and drains entrepreneurial talent. To address these challenges, our new report recommends deepening Europe's Capital Markets Union and ensuring that public interventions catalyse private investment. Our President Nadia Calviño highlighted the need for a unified capital markets union and coordinated public policies to create a supportive entrepreneurial ecosystem. Unlocking Tomorrow's Giants: Europe's Rally for Tech Dominance through a Unified Start-Up Renaissance (From Start-Up Symphony to Tech Symphony) In recent years, Europe, despite being an economic powerhouse, has trailed behind the United States, particularly in technology and innovation. To reclaim dominance, a crucial element of the European strategy involves fostering the start-up landscape by fostering collaboration and creating a more entrepreneur-friendly environment. According to McKinsey & Company, a united European effort to stimulate entrepreneurship could potentially unlock $3.3 trillion in additional market capitalization and create 3.6 to 8.1 million jobs. While certain countries have showcased success stories in start-up activity, Europe must consolidate its efforts to compete globally. The current economic gap between the US and Europe is substantial, with a 20% difference in GDP. Europe's lag in technology and innovation, especially in areas like automation, 5G connectivity, quantum computing, and composite materials, further widens this gap. Diversity reigns in Europe's business environments, with each country having its own regulations, funding access, and labor pools. From scale-ups in Sweden to start-ups in Ireland, the landscape is varied. "Ryan is Curious" - Can Europe Regain Its Global Corporate Giants? 🌍 At the start of the 21st century, 41 of the world’s 100 most valuable companies were based in Europe. Today, that number has dropped to 19. Nobel Prize-winning economist Jean Tirole calls this trend "worrying" as it leads to less innovation, slower economic growth, and diminished geopolitical influence. So why is it crucial for Europe to keep producing its own global corporate giants? As you all know, I recently was in Europe and here are a few reasons that stood out to me: ⏩Economic Growth: Big companies drive substantial economic activity, create jobs, and stimulate local and regional economies. ⏩Innovation: Large firms have the resources to invest in R&D, leading to breakthroughs that smaller companies might not achieve alone. ⏩Geopolitical Influence: Corporate giants significantly enhance a region's geopolitical clout, shaping global standards and policies. The eu/acc (European Accelerationism) is a valuable movement, launched by Andreas Klinger, that promotes more standardisation for investment in Europe as a mean to improve the ecosystem, bringing value for founders and the economy. It talks about very good points (check Andreas' post in the comments), showing the benefits that US ecosystem has and how Europe doesn't stay behind, despite memes saying otherwise. Something fundamental to think about is that it is inspired in the e/acc (“Effective Accelerationism”), a techno-optimist vision of the world inspired by Marc Andreessen, which encourages faster innovation and deplores anything that might slow down progress. Regulations, climate change, safety, etc. That is the mindset of "move fast and break things", that we have enough examples to understand it's not sustainable in the long run. Lucrative for a few, yes, but not healthy for the society. We need to improve the ecosystem, for sure, so let's create something better, in a way that combines growth in a Regenerative Economy, fighting the Climate Crisis, protecting Labor Laws (updating, as much needed), stand for Human Rights, Diversity, and everything that makes us humans, not money machines. Yet she also reminds us of the importance of doing more to continually improve the innovation ecosystem at a wider, more holistic level.
