Guiding companies from good ideas to thriving businesses

“Each time you hire – whether to backfill or grow, you are opening yourself and your company up to exposure.” Wise words and an important reminder, courtesy of Charlotte Merritt with Insperity. Charlotte spends her days guiding business owners and leaders through the labyrinth of HR needs, standards, policies, and requirements, and she took some time to speak to me about the risks - and joys - of hiring. Thanks for highlighting the risks associated with hiring, especially the great insights from Charlotte Merritt. The fact that hiring opens a a company to risk underscores the need for legal and compliant practices, considering the ever-changing landscape of hiring laws across states. The call to define company culture early on is crucial. I'm curious about practical steps or strategies you recommend for businesses to define and enforce their unique culture. Looking forward to more insights from both of you into effective risk management and cultural development in hiring practices.

I've seen far too many situations in which people were so eager to find someone they were too quick to hire. They paid for it later in more ways than one. I've recently noticed that companies don't seem to check references like they used to. Any thoughts on that, Rebecca Gebhardt Brizi....do they believe they won't get the real story because of possible legal concerns?

There really is so much to consider when bringing on new people. It doesn't end at "You're hired! Orientation starts...."

It's eye-opening to consider how the hiring process exposes a company and the potential costs involved, Rebecca. Could you share some strategies for effectively integrating new employees into a company's culture, especially in remote or hybrid work environments?"

Like you said, defining culture with your help first is key - hiring for fit can't happen if you don't know what your fit/culture is.
