The National Technician shortage is still a pressing issue that is facing the transport industry. 🚛 Keeping trucks and vans safe and roadworthy is THE most important element in our line of work! ‼️ ‼️ Without our technicians, where would we be? They are the beating heart ❤️ of the industry, and we want to show our appreciation…. EVERY Technician at RH Commercial Vehicles receives £1,500 tool vouchers a year to help cover the cost of tools 🔧 – which are expensive! Trucks and Vans have come a long way over the years, there’s so much new technology in the cabs and around the chassis, not to mention the alternative fuels available now 🔋🔌! It really is an exciting time to get involved in the transport sector, but there is so much to learn! Therefore our technicians should be paid what they deserve and their new skills should be represented in their earnings. That’s why we have competitive salaries💸 for our techs and we are proud! The shortage will only worsen if this issue goes unresolved. Let's work together as an industry to attract more people into this essential field by providing fair benefits for their skills. A bleak picture of the future market and the likelihood that auto technician numbers will meet the quantity needed. Another article I read highlighted that 75% of technicians would refer others to work at their shop. This is an interesting statistic in an environment in which culture and pay are frequently painted as inadequate. It could be a case of techs questioning whether the grass is really greener elsewhere. The bottom line is that the technicians that your company needs are probably employed elsewhere and are unlikely to be actively searching for new opportunities.

One of the many great things I learned working for Ford: The best way to show a technician you care about them is to invest in their growth. I just finished creating 90 day goals for 22 Entry level technicians. In 90 days, all of our young techs will be closer to becoming a Senior Master Technician. For those that don’t believe in training their techs: Either train them and they’ll make you money, or we’re going to train them to make us money. #bestplacetowork #gaudinmotorcompanyrocks #pathwaytotheshop

The poll has come to an end and the results are in!📊 Here are a few reasons why the question asked matters: 1️⃣ Clarity for Both Parties: Establishing a clear initial contract duration ensures that both parties understand the commitment from the get-go. It's the foundation for a transparent and mutually beneficial partnership. 2️⃣ Career Planning: For vehicle technicians, knowing the initial contract duration is vital for career planning. It allows them to make informed decisions about their professional trajectory, growth, and development. 3️⃣ Industry Standards: Exploring this question helps us understand the current industry standards. Are short-term contracts becoming more prevalent? Or is there a trend towards longer-term commitments? Let's kick off a discussion! 🚀 What are your thoughts on the initial duration of contracts for vehicle technicians? 📊 Poll Results: What Matters Most for Contract Vehicle Technicians? I recently ran a poll asking: "When selecting your next opportunity as a contract vehicle technician, what is the most important factor to you?" The results are in, and they offer some valuable insights: Pay rate: 82% Hours available: 0% Length of contract: 5% Type of workshop: 14% No surprise here—pay rate leads the way with a commanding 82%, showing that competitive compensation is the driving force for most technicians when considering their next role. In an industry where expertise is highly sought after, fair pay is essential for attracting top talent. But what about the other factors? While hours available didn’t receive any votes, both type of workshop (14%) and length of contract (5%) still matter for some. This indicates that for a segment of technicians, having the right work environment and job security are important considerations beyond pay alone. For employers, these insights are crucial. Competitive pay is a must, but don’t overlook the importance of creating a positive and well-equipped workshop or offering flexibility in contract lengths. A holistic approach to recruitment can help build stronger, long-lasting relationships with your contract technicians. Making changes today by listening to our market can lead to bigger success tomorrow. #VehicleTechnician #ContractWork #AutomotiveIndustry #PollResults #CareerChoices #TopTalent #WorkplaceEnvironment

Is the Job of a Technician Recession-Resistant? In the ever-evolving economy, certain professions stand resilient in the face of economic downturns. One such profession that defies unemployment lines during recessions is that of a Service Technician. While many careers witness a decline during severe economic recessions, the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment remain not only essential but in high demand. In times of economic prosperity, consumers invest in new vehicles that require regular maintenance and occasional warranty repairs. Conversely, during recessionary economic periods, individuals opt to preserve their existing machinery, ensuring optimal functionality to avoid the financial burden of buying new. Proving supply and demand for service technicians remain steady even when consumer spending on other goods and services drops. Recent trends like Independent repair shops reporting an uptick in repair orders in 2023 as more consumers chose to maintain their older, often fully paid-for vehicles. This preference for prolonging the lifespan of existing vehicles rather than committing to new, long-term financial contracts highlights the cost-effectiveness of regular maintenance. Even Major repair bills represent a mere couple of car payments, a fraction of the financial commitment of purchasing a new vehicle. Furthermore, the increased dependence on personal vehicles caused by COVID-19 for daily commutes highlights the vital role played by service technicians. Americans rely on their cars for work, school, grocery runs, and more. The prospect of being without a car for an extended period is a scenario most individuals cannot tolerate. Ask any Service Advisor in the industry. As people continue to drive their vehicles for longer durations, the future of automotive repair appears remarkably promising. The world of professional technicians offers diverse job opportunities and varied career paths. It's a unique field, tailor-made for individuals who love getting their hands dirty – a testament to the importance and recession-resistant nature of the Professional Technician's role in our capitalist society 🇺🇸. #NADAshow #NADA #fixedops #autorepair #fixedoperations #technician #technicians #automotiveindustry #serviceadvisor #mechanic #fixedops #automotivetechnician #dieselmechanic #dieseltrucks #customerservice #TechnicianTalk Snap-on Tools Snap-on Milwaukee Tool GEARWRENCH Würth Group Blackwater Diesel Fullbay Detect Auto

⁉️ Should skilled automotive technicians diagnose a vehicle and give it to another technician to repair if the job is easy? 🤔 Maybe. Let’s start with the compensation plan. If a technician is paid off #flatrate, I think you’ll be hard pressed to find a technician willing to give away repairs to be made by someone else. Next let’s talk accountability. If the first technician diagnosed the vehicle, the second technician installed the part(s), and then the vehicle still has its original faults after the repair, who is responsible to correct the fault? There are shops set up to have a dedicated team for diagnostics and a dedicated team for repairs. But those shops designed themselves in that orientation and have likely implimented compensation plans and accountability policy to make it work properly. ✅ Overall, interesting topic and great question. —— I’m Chris Craig.
