Did you know that 200,000 people are living with sight loss in London and just under 700,000 (1 in every 12 adults) are living with a sight threatening condition? That’s why we are working with Fight for Sight / Vision Foundation, to help them support their vision of a future where people living with sight loss are equal citizens and preventable blindness is a thing of the past. We awarded a grant to the organisation to deliver an online event for blind and partially sighted people between 16 and 25, highlighting the importance of maintaining mental fitness. The event served as a prequel to a set of four in-person activity days organised in partnership with Jamie’s Farm. Each activity day offered 10 young people the chance to spend a day outdoors in nature, working with animals and participating in challenges and activities that allowed them to explore themselves and their well-being journeys. “It was great to be given tasks that you don’t normally do and be given the opportunity to complete them independently. I particularly enjoyed interacting with the animals and chopping firewood.” – Sam, Event Participant IICF recognises that the UK has one of the poorest rates of social mobility in the developed world. We’re working to change this by uniting the industry in volunteering, leadership and grants to social mobility charities. But I’ll challenge you ... ❓ Why that charity? ❓ Do you have a personal connection to the cause? Or did it just seem like a good one to donate to? BUT WHAT IF you build residential homes because you have a core belief that “humanity deserves to have their basic needs met by having a roof over their head”? And every decision you make as a company revolves around that belief and helping to meet ‘that basic human need’. So you give your non-trades employees time off to help Habitat for Humanity build homes for deserving families, for instance. With a proper framework to follow, there is a myriad of other ways you can embed that belief into the DNA of your company to come up with meaningful ways to bring that impact to life. That’s a different narrative. Hopefully, you can see the difference. Done right, this type of shift gives everyone in your company a different purpose for coming in every day and more meaning beyond their paycheque. Individual donors contribute 68% of the $427 billion philanthropy industry. Yet, fundraisers often shield donors from having hard conversations about the practices and theories underpinning modern philanthropy and how they perpetuate the injustices and inequities nonprofits aim to eliminate. To pivot away from toxic charity toward a shared vision for community wellbeing that is transformative instead of transactional, we must: ➡️ Center race, equity, and social justice. ➡️ Be thoughtful about which funders we take on. ➡️ Share resources and ideas to foster a network of support. ➡️ Value time invested as equally as money. Community-centric fundraising calls for fundraisers and donors to grapple with and address the root causes of inequity, including the destructive effects of capitalism and how we may be complicit in furthering them through our practices.
