Why is the 4th of July sensitive for people of color? The 4th of July recognizes a pivotal moment in American history. The passage of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 solidified political separation between North America and Great Britain and proclaimed “all men are created equal.” However, we know the lived reality for people of color has been strife with institutional inequality and perpetual social injustice. Hence, in today’s blog, we’re offering some 4th of July party ideas appropriate for uplifting people of color. The lived experiences of Black and brown people in America entangles the traditional meaning of Independence Day and thus, how we should acknowledge it and the perspective it represents. This convoluted narrative is marked by centuries of enslavement, land-grabbing, labor exploitation, institutional racism and a plethora of other structural inequities too long to list. These truths inevitably conflict with the celebratory nature of July 4th. However, centering the perspectives of marginalized communities in this country alongside the naked intentions of the Declaration of Independence is essential when planning or engaging in celebratory festivities. https://lnkd.in/gTKwkUui

Hi network, I recently had the privilege of joining a thought-provoking Teams call hosted by I have a voice CIC on April 16th. The focus was on careers in policy analysis and influencing, featuring insightful discussions from three key speakers. Cllr Zainab Asunramu Ali Gunn Thea Ridley-Castle The session covered the speakers' journeys into politics, their current roles, impactful campaigns and projects, and concluded with an engaging Q&A. Key insight I gained: - The importance of a proportional electoral system in addressing underrepresentation and fostering positive change. - The urgent need to tackle societal issues like diversity, racism, and unfair pay, with actionable steps such as rallying public support through letter-writing campaigns to government officials and local MPs. - Insights on navigating the political landscape, emphasizing the significance of connections and the behind-the-scenes efforts that contribute to effective governance. - The importance of self-care during challenging times in one's career or workplace. As a young Black woman aspiring to pursue a career in politics and deeply passionate about these issues, I'm grateful for the opportunity to participate in this dialogue. Remember, your vote matters. Today marks the 60th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, a pivotal moment in American history. As we reflect on this milestone, we honor the heroes who fought for equality and justice. The legacy of civil rights leader John Lewis, who passed away four years ago, serves as a reminder of the enduring struggle for a more perfect union – a note that rang clear as I listened to the speakers at his foundation’s “Good Trouble” event last month. Lewis's call for "good trouble, necessary trouble" resonates today as we navigate ongoing challenges. His message of perseverance and vision continues to inspire individuals to advocate for positive change. The work of leaders like Dr. Dorothy Height echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of collective action in shaping a better future. I had the opportunity to work under her as an intern before she passed away years ago - I remain inspired by her example to continue the legacy of change, a responsibility all of us should embrace. On this Independence Day, let us reflect on the progress made and renew our commitment to advancing justice and improving lives of all Americans. Change is a gradual process, requiring dedication across generations. As we celebrate the nation's founding, we must acknowledge the contributions of those who championed important causes, laying the groundwork for addressing our long-standing challenges. While the journey towards an equal society is complex with many victories and setbacks, our efforts contribute to a legacy of transformation. We're out of the office today for Juneteenth. ❤️💛💚🖤 Juneteenth, observed on June 19th each year, marks the end of slavery in the United States. It commemorates the day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger announced General Order No. 3 in Galveston, Texas, proclaiming the freedom of all enslaved people in the state. This announcement came two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth symbolizes the promise of freedom fulfilled for all enslaved individuals in the U.S. and serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for racial equality and justice. By learning from history, we can make more informed choices in the present. Juneteenth reminds us of the progress we have made as a society but also highlights that there is still much work to be done to achieve true equality and justice for all. It's essential to acknowledge the achievements and the challenges we face going forward. While it may be a newer holiday, its importance cannot be understated. Just like other holidays in our calendar, Juneteenth is a time for celebration and reflection, reminding us of the struggles and triumphs that have happened. Juneteenth can be a time to reflect on our past, celebrate progress, and commit to creating a more inclusive and equitable future. As the saying goes, "Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it." We all are responsible for creating a positive culture and safeguarding equity, inclusion, dignity, and respect for all.

While we celebrate Independence Day, let’s remember: these issues which are Support Diverse Careers: Encourage children to pursue sports and unconventional paths, not just engineering or medicine. Promote Sports: Invest in and support a variety of sports for holistic development. Move Beyond Blame Culture: Focus on solutions and personal responsibility rather than blaming external factors. Combat Mental Health Stigma: Normalize mental health discussions and make support accessible. Respect Unconventional Dreams: Stop criticizing those with unique or unconventional aspirations. Strengthen Laws Against Sexual Violence: Implement stricter laws and ensure effective enforcement to protect the vulnerable. Address Business Monopolies: Promote fair competition and reduce monopoly dominance in industries. Respect Personal Boundaries: Stop interfering in others' personal lives and business decisions; support autonomy and privacy. Confront Denial: Acknowledge problems and face them head-on instead of denying their existence. Promote Accountability: Ensure that accountability is taken when problems arise, not just when things go well.

It's important to recognize the complexity of the challenges facing diversity today. Legislative actions play a significant role in shaping the environment for diversity initiatives. Policies and agendas that promote inclusivity and equity can provide a strong foundation for progress, while those that hinder or restrict diversity efforts can create barriers to meaningful change. The cultural backlash against DEI initiatives is a reflection of deeper societal issues, including resistance to change and fear of the unknown. This resistance can manifest in various ways, such as skepticism towards the benefits of diversity, pushback against affirmative action policies, or reluctance to engage in diversity training programs.
