Tons of powerful data in the latest research from Strada Education Foundation and The Burning Glass Institute #TalentDisrupted report out this week. The big takeaway? *Half* of college grads are underemployed. Notably, the researchers found that the odds of underemployment for graduates who had at least one internship are 48.5 percent lower than those who had no internships. A key recommendation in the report? Ensure all college students have access to paid internships. That sounds good in theory but could prove problematic in practice... because it conflates form with function. While students need internships, internships need disrupting. To make work-integrated learning both affordable and effective, colleges and employers need to take a much more disciplined, outcomes-driven approach. Last week, I participated in The Chronicle of Higher Education's event, "The Future of Academic Internships," which delved into the increasing emphasis on internships for higher-education students. The discussion highlighted how colleges are reshaping their services to better connect academic experiences with career outcomes. As this evolution takes shape, what implications arise from colleges extending internship opportunities to all students? The challenges that must be addressed are important in my role on the Practicum team here at Gillings. Economic development depends on a ready workforce. The Workforce Scholars Initiative is one way the Office of Research and Economic Development - Mississippi State University fosters innovation. Led by Lisa Gooden-Hunley, the program connects undergraduate students with internships and provides career development to have these students primed for jobs after graduation. The fall 2024 cohort recently held its graduation with representatives from businesses where the students did internships. #TakingCareofWhatMatters
