Is the new tariff policy on Chinese EVs enough to protect domestic industries while fostering innovation and competition? 🌐🔋🚘 With President Biden's administration rolling out a HUGE increase on tariffs on electric vehicles (EVs) from China, there's a heated debate brewing on whether this move will bolster US-based companies or stifle the global advancement of EV technology. On one side, supporters argue it's a step towards levelling the playing field for American EV manufacturers, providing them the much-needed impetus to innovate and grow. They contend that safeguarding the local market is imperative for national economic stability and job creation. 🇺🇸💼 However, critics are voicing concerns that tariffs might backfire, leading to increased costs for consumers and potentially slowing down EV adoption rates. They suggest that embracing a competitive global market could drive technological advancements and cost reductions, benefitting not only the consumer but also contributing to environmental sustainability. 🌿💸 Should policy making be protectionist or should it promote open-market competition to push the industry forward? Who stands to gain or lose in the long run? Share your insights and let's dissect the impacts of this tariff strategy together. #EVtariffs #USpolicy #GlobalCompetition

Here are the new US vs China EV tariffs. A 4x hike on Chinese EV import, along with more duties for EV batteries & materials. The government says they do it for the people. But the people will be worse off instead. Keeping competition away will only benefit the local EV-reluctant auto industry, and the lack of affordable and plentiful EV options will hinder the EV adoption growth in the US, which would otherwise flourish. I think David Fickling put it perfectly in his recent Bloomberg column: "Cosy within a market protected by distance and tariffs, and fearful of the wrenching shifts required by both electrification and Chinese competition, many executives would like to believe the whole energy transition thing was just a bad dream.” What do you think of the protectionist measures? PS - this picture is a draft from the EV Universe newsletter I'm sending out today, with a whole deep dive focused on Chinese EVs and what'll happen next. post 1/2 more items in the article but these are more specific to certain products that have seen falling prices for years but are targeted as product dumping. solar cells and panels saw increases back in 2017 due to industry complaints for product dumping. most lithium batteries come from china as the US does not have the capacity to process lithium and turn it into batteries to meet demand. and chinese EV tarrifs? how many chinese EVs are on the streets in the US that this is actually a problem (product dumping)? lower prices is what drives adoption faster than higher prices for vehicles with "don't park this in your garage" warnings. this may drive a lot of rebranding via companies like Vinfast ... which is vietnamese, but won't drive all other EV manufacturers to lower prices in the US. 1. Electric vehicle tariffs will increase from 25% to 100% this year. 2. Batteries: The tariff on lithium-ion EV batteries and battery parts will rise from 7.5% to 25% in 2024. The tariff on lithium-ion non-EV batteries will rise to the same level in 2026. 3. Solar cells will rise from a 25% tariff to a 50% tariff this year. https://lnkd.in/ek4rH4TP

Expect cheap disposable EVs out of China to out price, advertise and doninate other EV manufacturers in Australia. When you crunch the numbers, see how cheap these things are and the volume they can produce. You’ve got to ask, who are they screwing costs for labour, materials etc… and if they’re that cheap. How ‘ethical’ is Australia in supporting it. https://lnkd.in/gq7V5uft very
