In the article 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘱𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦, Beatriz and Tamalika explain what we do at CogniGron. Contemporary computers are using a vast amount of energy for memory and processing, and by making computer chips that emulate the brain’s ability to process information, we aim to solve complex problems using far less energy. Tamalika Banerjee and her team are working on next-gen chips at her start-up, IMChip, focusing on creating energy-efficient in-memory chips, combining groundbreaking materials like complex oxides. For many researchers, experience abroad is an important step in their career. Three recently graduated scholars from our faculty can now do their research at foreign research institutes thanks to a Rubicon grant from NWO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) and ZonMw! This programme allows young, highly promising researchers to gain international research experience. Congratulations to the researchers! ⬇ Ryan van Mastrigt (Institute of Physics): Machine Learning to Control Self-Folding Self-folding – a chain folding itself into a shape – is nature’s preferred fabrication method, but it is hard to control in model systems. The researcher aims to use machine learning to control this folding and thereby create new materials at the micron scale.     Dr Matteo Mazzanti (Institute of Physics): Next-Generation Ion Trapping: Scalable Micro-Penning Trap Arrays for Quantum Computing and Simulations  The project aims to use microfabricated Penning traps as a new platform to tackle the scalability challenges facing current trapped ion quantum computing systems, presenting an innovative approach for advancing quantum information science.     Dr Eva J. Meeus (Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (University of Amsterdam)): Medicine activation through shuttle catalysis  To realize cancer treatments with reduced side effects, I will study a new synthetic methodology based on shuttle catalysis to locally activate drugs. This methodology allows the conversion of inactive drugs into active anticancer drugs. In collaboration with Aniah, a Grenoble-based company specialized in circuit analysis and verification, the LIP (Lyon) and Verimag (Grenoble) laboratories are offering two CIFRE (i.e. industrial) PhD fundings in Computer Sciences, revolving around the following keywords : formal methods, SMT solving, compilation, logic, integrated circuits, OCaml. Both theses would be supervised by Bruno Ferres (Verimag) and myself (LIP). Those theses are proposed in continuation of a fruitful collaboration (one post doc, and another CIFRE PhD ongoing). Based on the candidates wishes, the work wan be done either in LIP (Lyon), and/or in Verimag (Grenoble). Details for both offers can be find below. Not too long ago, I had the opportunity to talk to Dr. Doreen Siegfried about #OpenScience, to reflect upon how I approach research, and why I turned to Open Science. The interview is out now with the ZBW – Leibniz-Informationszentrum Wirtschaft / ZBW – Leibniz Information Centre for Economics. My additional two cents: 🔑 Open science helps us work together and accumulate knowledge from transparent and reusable materials, data, code, etc. 🔑 The aim is to share knowledge and this, of course, requires training - no need to build the perfect code or repository from scratch 🔑 There are many ways to get engaged, for example with the Framework for Open and Reproducible Research Training (FORRT) or by getting in touch with a local Open Science Center such as the LMU Open Science Center
