What does a high functioning engineering team look like? I think there are two questions you can ask: "Why not?" and "What if?" When we are confronted by novel problems and ideas, it tends to bother our ego, and we become defensive. If you’re defensive about something, for example, AI, it makes you feel insecure, and as humans, we begin to tell stories. You can tell a "why not" story about why this thing will not work, or you can tell a "what if" story about what if this thing works. Most people react with "why not," and some people react with "what if." You see lots of different patterns in disruptive innovation because of that. I think good technical teams tend to have the "what if" mentality about technical problems. So you can listen for the tone of the argument when observing a team. Is everybody arguing about why this is not solvable, why it's a bad problem, why your solution is crappy, and so on? Or is the team arguing in more of an innovative or improv mode, a "yes and" mode? Where they’re talking about "What if we tried this?" "What if we try that?" "What if we get around the constraint that way?" That’s a healthy team. I think unhealthy teams usually have people who are less focused on actually wanting to do the engineering and solve the problems and more focused on things like their status. They tend to be insecure, and when you’re insecure, you’re constantly trying to be right. I think good technical teams have people who are just a little bit more humble and a little bit more open-minded, and the team cooperates and collaborates to find their way to the solutions. I think that cultural thing about open versus closed, growth mindset versus closed mindset, is probably the hallmark of a good technical team. Sam Schillace started six startups and has led big products at Google and now Microsoft. This was just one of the insights he shared during our conversation on In Depth. One of the best gifts in my tech career was deep exposure to clients. It's surprising how few technology practitioners desire or are granted access to clients. Mitzi DeWolfe, Hyun Park and others frequently flew or drove me to client meetings to advocate for technology. This taught me how to advocate for clients through technology, making my career more fulfilling and successful. As a leader in the tech field, I try to ensure my team has a direct understanding of the challenges facing our clients. This leads to a more human-centric developer mindset. Our work is to solve human problems through technology, starting with treating practitioners like humans, not robots. This perspective leads to increased productivity and is reflected in our work, from our communications to our code.
