Fantastic tips to build friendships while building your network! Coming in at #12: SHOW YOUR HUMANITY. While building and nurturing a network can take years, it often leads to your most meaningful relationships and significant opportunities. Engaging authentically with your audience—be it on social media or in person—promotes connections. Present yourself as a “human,” not just a product. At the end of the day, most people want to support trustworthy businesses led by good people.

Equipping the next generation of leaders for success is essential and effective networking is so important to that success. Networking is not something that has come naturally to me - I don't like selling and I don't like being sold to but I do like interesting conversations that create value for both sides. Reframing networking as relationship building was so helpful to me. If you are an undergraduate, a graduate, an apprentice, an employee, an entrepreneur - anyone who feels they would like to network better, come along. It's going to be a light -hearted event with some helpful signposting.

Here we go! The convention season for themed entertainment industries is about to start, so now is the perfect time to reflect on the power of forging new relationships and strengthening existing ones with your fellow industry leaders. Remember, these meaningful connections and the expansion of your professional network collectively helps impact the direction of the future of entertainment experiences across the globe. Ever participated in an Unconference? You may have attended lots of conferences. You know what they are like, speaker after speaker, punctuated by panel discussions, all telling us things while we sit and listen. Conferences have their place of course, but they are typically static and didactic, with the odd question and answer session networking time and accompanying trade show the only real forms of interaction. Well at Yellow Edge, we’ve always tried to do things a little differently, especially when it comes to tapping into how adults really prefer to learn. That’s one of the things we are excited about our Unconference on January 22nd and 23rd 2025 at the Belconnen Arts Centre in Canberra.     An Unconference is a gathering of people with similar interests who are keen to share with and learn from each other, without over doing the typical talking heads format of a conventional conference. Sure, there may some listening going on to fellow practitioners, thought pieces and provocations, but learning in an unconference is primarily dialog and conversation based, experiential and often self-directed. Leadership can feel lonely, but it doesn’t have to. Whether you’re running a clinic, region, or a company, it’s easy to fall into a place where you’re surrounded by so many people and yet feel isolated. You feel the weight of making the right decision, showing up in the right way for the people in your charge, all while being your best self. This pressure can be heavy, and something that has helped me alleviate it is connecting with a peer group of leaders outside my organization. I find great comfort in sharing experiences with others who truly understand the complexities of executive roles. It’s a reminder that I’m not in this alone. Thank you Dr. Charna Mintz and Adam D. Hahs who on separate occasions made themselves available to talk through some things with me. In leadership, knowing you're supported by others who’ve walked similar paths can be the key to staying grounded and making better decisions. Whether you’re managing a team or running an organization, this peer support outside of your own staff is essential. Find your network, lean on them when the burden gets too heavy, and embrace the power of shared perspectives. You’ll discover that resilience isn’t built in isolation, but in shared community.
