When I got the chance to be interviewed by Pipeline & Gas Journal about corrosion control and coatings in oil and natural gas pipelines, I didn't think I would have much to say as I am not an expert in coatings. What I do know is that with better alloys designed specifically for the oil and gas industry, we can reduce reliance on coatings.    Turns out that was a useful perspective for the article. Grateful to have been included.

In our Special Integrity issue, Cal Chapman at Chapman Engineering discusses pipeline integrity management over time, focusing on the Trans-Alaska pipeline: "Taking one famous (indeed, iconic) pipeline as a discussion point, the 48 in. nominal diameter (122 cm) crude oil Trans-Alaska pipeline was put into service in August 1977, spanning a total length of 800 miles (1288 km). Now 46 plus years old in terms of active service, the original pipeline design was for 30 years of useful life. It has thus far performed for 50% more years than originally intended. Is this asset being sustained? Is it being operated in a sustainable fashion and, even now, for a long-term service outlook? This certainly seems to be the case." Hi Praveen; I read through your post/article and have some comments on the same. The relief have H2S and H2O which means a NACE requirement (depending on H2S PP) for the FKOD or CDD (Closed Darin).  This might be an added cost while going for new drain vessel. Sometimes the Flare KOD can be totally eliminated with a closed drain drum at the lower grade which also eliminates the height of pipe racks, and the flare header can run the sleeper.  I have done one project like this. The large condensation volume of 20 mins of 2538 Ft3 leading to design of 3045 Ft3 of new vessel is really a concern and a cost impact.  I have not seen the PFD overall, but design shall be to recover NGL (either by JT effect or mechanical refrigeration) before and sending light gas to flare (as required) and providing back-up for power loss scenario. Cost comparison for Hot insulation/electrical tracing, getting rid of FKOD and proposing NACE required CDD, eliminating power failure scenario needs to be worked out. Further, location of FKOD is based on sterile area and shall be outside the process plant battery limit. 

A year ago, we completed a major design project for Shell International Trading and Shipping Company Limited, which included the creation of a concept design for a 20,000m3 liquid hydrogen carrier, as well as studies on hydrogen as a cargo or fuel. The collaboration involved aligning specifications, feasibility studies, and design work, verified through Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis. “These are very cool projects, both literally and metaphorically, with liquid hydrogen clocking in at -253°C. It is always a privilege to design pioneering vessels that have the potential to drive the energy transition forwards. And it’s become part of Houlder’s DNA.” said Jonathan Strachan, Houlder’s Chief Technical Officer. Continuing our work with Shell on a variety of shipping decarbonisation projects, we aim to see commercially operational ships with lower emissions on the water in the 2030s. This, we believe, is possible through a combination of existing technologies and fuels, whilst also bringing in more radical change to meet the International Maritime Organization’s target of net-zero emissions by 2050. Maritime Decarbonisation It would be interesting to know: 1. the cost per ton of CO2 captured as well as the size of the capture unit. 2. what is the intended use for the captured CO2 once it is unloaded at port, ie whether it is destined for permanent sequestration or converted into chemicals/fuels. "Solvang is a Norwegian shipping company transporting LPG and petrochemical tonnage. Seatrium’s scope of work under the project will include basic design, detailed engineering, procurement and upgrading of electrical and automation systems, as well as the integration of a carbon capture and compression or storage system. This will be carried out on Solvang’s 21,289 cubic m ethylene carrier Clipper Eris. The project, which will be piloted on board Clipper Eris over one year, aims to use amine cleaning technology to capture 70 per cent of carbon dioxide (CO2) in exhaust gas emitted from the vessel’s main engine. It will involve the entire value chain for handling CO2, including liquefaction and storage on board the vessel. “If the pilot project is successful, Solvang intends to install the technology on some of our vessels, including newbuilds, thereby contributing to a faster take-up of the technology,” said Solvang’s fleet director Tor Ask."

Retrievable ESP Assembly: This assembly houses the ESP. system components, and is designed for retrieval and redeployment using the chosen deployment method (wireline, coiled tubing, or sucker rods).
