Maritime Decarbonisation It would be interesting to know: 1. the cost per ton of CO2 captured as well as the size of the capture unit. 2. what is the intended use for the captured CO2 once it is unloaded at port, ie whether it is destined for permanent sequestration or converted into chemicals/fuels. "Solvang is a Norwegian shipping company transporting LPG and petrochemical tonnage. Seatrium’s scope of work under the project will include basic design, detailed engineering, procurement and upgrading of electrical and automation systems, as well as the integration of a carbon capture and compression or storage system. This will be carried out on Solvang’s 21,289 cubic m ethylene carrier Clipper Eris. The project, which will be piloted on board Clipper Eris over one year, aims to use amine cleaning technology to capture 70 per cent of carbon dioxide (CO2) in exhaust gas emitted from the vessel’s main engine. It will involve the entire value chain for handling CO2, including liquefaction and storage on board the vessel. “If the pilot project is successful, Solvang intends to install the technology on some of our vessels, including newbuilds, thereby contributing to a faster take-up of the technology,” said Solvang’s fleet director Tor Ask."

NEW FEED AWARDED FOR FIRST INDEPENDENT AMMONIA TERMINAL OF NORTH-WEST EUROPE Proton Ventures, in collaboration with Vesta Terminals, resumes FEED towards FID after completing a scoping and feasibility study in the first four months of 2023. The FEED project aims to narrow down cost estimates and achieve FID by 2024. Proton Ventures BV is set to complete Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) for re-purposing of two 30.000m³ ammonia tanks in Vlissingen (Flushing), NL. With 2 x 30,000m3 refrigerated storage capacity for ammonia, Vesta is positioned to handle an initial throughput of one million metric tons per annum (MTPA) NH3 for off-takers in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. The terminal is equipped to supply green ammonia to seagoing vessels, reloading into barges, and rail tank cars. In the second phase, the throughput capacity will double, and a connection to the Dutch hydrogen pipeline network is planned. The vision extends to a world-scale cracker near the terminal, facilitating the conversion of green ammonia back to hydrogen. Anticipating the commissioning of the Vesta Terminal project is set for the 1st quarter of 2027. Activities include reconvert existing tanks for ammonia storage in compliance with environmental and safety regulations, detail Process and Instrumentation Diagrams, create procurement documentation, provide a Total Installed Cost estimate, and plan spatial provisions for potential expansion. Calix reveals successful FEED study on 30,000 tonne H-DRI plant. By Edward Laity Calix Limited has completed a Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) study on a hydrogen direct reduced iron (H-DRI) demonstration plant in Australia. The 30,000 tonne per annum Zero Emissions Steel Technology (ZESTY) H-DRI plant is estimated to produce near-zero emissions hot briquetted iron (HBI) from low grade iron ore for AUD$630-800 ($410-521) per tonne, according to the FEED study. ZESTY is expected to reduce the emissions intensity of iron ore to metal iron from 1.89 tonnes of CO2 to almost zero, a significant drop as the current reduction process accounts for 80-85% of the steel industry’s emissions. Supported via funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, a final investment decision (FID) on the facility is being progressed a subject to plant location and commercial agreements that are currently under negotiation.} https://lnkd.in/d-XAaQUf

This ambitious open research project will provide ground-breaking near-zero carbon #technology and capabilities to the international steel industry. Funded by the European Commission #NextGenerationEU and backed by the Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy through RINA Consulting - Centro Sviluppo Materiali (#CSM) in Castel Romano (Italy), the €88M Hydra project is part of the #IPCEI (Important Projects of Common European Interest) and will involve a dedicated team of 120 people. Hydra will involve the design and construction of an operational pilot-plant that will utilize hydrogen in every stage of the steel #production cycle. The structure, scheduled for completion by 2025, will consist of a 30m high direct iron ore reduction (#DRI) tower using hydrogen as a reducing agent, an electric furnace (#EAF) and a #reheating furnace. Through a testing and qualification #hub, the #project will also characterise the materials, equipment and internal infrastructure required by steel #producers, as well as those required for hydrogen #transportation to the plant and storage, to transition to 100% hydrogen fuelled steel production, ensuring a comprehensive and validated shift to hydrogen-based processes. As part of Hydra, #RINA, thanks to the extensive experience in hydrogen-based #decarbonisation technologies among which the world first test of 30% gas-hydrogen blend in steel forging, will also establish a training centre to gather and disseminate know-how related to the design, implementation, and deployment of hydrogen-based decarbonization #technologies.
