🚨 Maritime Security Update: Effective Response to Suspected Piracy Attack in the Gulf of Aden 🚢 Date: 10 May 2024, 0757 UTC Location: Approx. 90nm Northwest of Bosaso, Somalia Coordinates: 12° 38’N, 48° 24’E a recent piracy incident that occurred in the Gulf of Aden. According to reports from UKMTO and MSCHOA, a merchant vessel was approached by a skiff, approximately 90nm northwest of Bosaso, Somalia. The skiff, manned by 5-6 armed individuals, attempted to board the vessel. Quick actions by the ship's crew and the onboard Armed Security Team (AST) were decisive. The AST engaged the pirates after they opened fire, effectively repelling the attack without any harm to the crew, and the vessel continued safely on its path. This incident underscores the persistent risk in the region but also highlights the effectiveness of onboard security measures and the BMP 5 counter-piracy guidelines. It occurs amidst reports of active pirate groups in the western Gulf of Aden and the Somali Basin, affirming the necessity for vigilance and prepared security responses. In a broader context, the recent memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Ethiopia and Somaliland is a significant step towards enhancing regional stability. This agreement aims to bolster economic ties and collaborative security efforts, which could play a crucial role in mitigating piracy and enhancing maritime security in the Gulf of Aden. The commitment to regional cooperation, as exemplified by the Ethio-Somaliland MOU, promises a strategic approach to reducing piracy incidents and ensuring the safety of international maritime routes. Stay informed and safe.
