Exciting to see the State of California move further institutionalize #inclusive #regional #economicdevelopment with the new "California Jobs First Council". The Council will be led by co-chairs Dee Dee Myers of California Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) and Stewart Knox of California Labor & Workforce Development Agency + seven other state agencies and their expertise across #healthcare, #agriculture, the #circulareconomy, #cleanenergy (and many other industries) + #landuseplanning at the Governor's Office of Planning and Research (OPR). As noted in the Office of California Governor Gavin Newsom's announcement, the Council will identify priority #industry sectors + help produce a statewide economic development plan. This type of statewide interconnective tissue is key to support #California's 13 economic regions (and their CA Jobs First Collaboratives) -- each of whom is developing a regional economic plan by this Summer. As Kate Gordon mentions below, this Council continues the work we started with #RegionsRiseTogether with Lenny Mendonca and worked on throughout the COVID pandemic focused on the competitive strengths and opportunities in ALL regions of #California. Will be interesting to see if and how the state rolls up the findings from Phase 1 research and strategies from Phase 2.

From the Claremont Institute's American Mind: "Government, social assistance, and healthcare account for 56 percent of the 2.8 million net new jobs over the past year, notes the Wall Street Journal, and for nearly all employment gains in blue states such as New York and Illinois. Professionals concentrated in government and largely public funded health programs have benefited mightily under Biden. Those who work directly for Washington recently a nice 5 percent raise from their president. The other side of the Democratic base, wealthier voters, are beneficiaries of the strong stock market. The top ten percent own roughly 60 percent of all stocks, while most others have holdings averaging $40,000. In contrast to real incomes, which have grown barely 1.7 percent since 2020, stock income has burgeoned by nearly 50 percent. So Paul Krugman is not entirely delusional when he thinks things are pretty good; they are indeed excellent for private jet flying tech oligarchs and tenured Ivy League professors. TIME2 CARE; The 80/20 Principle: The number of employees in an organization this says 80 percent of the work should be done by 20 percent of the people, these 20% are the floor leaders. The ones who know what to do and simply take care of things. This says 80 percent of the work is done by 20 percent of the people. TIMESHARE; Play up the culture, Be supportive in and out the work place, offering rewards for Internship and volunteerism programs.  Offer-flexible work options. Hold them accountable, to seek outgrowth opportunities, keep Track Time of their experience.

🔎 What was missing from last night’s #VPDebate with Senator JD Vance and Governor Tim Walz? A plan to help workers thrive in a shifting job market, prepare learners for career success, and ensure there are #NoDeadEnds on the road to a better life. Last night’s vice presidential debate was a refreshing return to policy in an election season that’s been largely devoid of details on how either party plans to address the issues voters care about. Vance, the Republican VP candidate from #Ohio, and Walz, the Democratic VP candidate from #Minnesota, appealed directly to low- and middle-income families on how their party platforms would make the American dream more attainable. What was sorely missing was any discussion of the vital role that education and skills training play in expanding economic opportunities. Walz emphasized the Biden-Harris Administration's economic policies, including clean energy investments that are creating good jobs and improving housing availability. But what he didn’t outline was a plan to ensure that workers have the skills they need to access those jobs. The new investments in the infrastructure, clean energy, and semiconductor sectors may help create 14 million jobs, but will there be enough trained workers to fill them? Vance focused on reviving American manufacturing and energy independence, touting tax cuts and deregulation as drivers of economic growth. But he, too, missed the mark by failing to address how these jobs will be filled without investing in upskilling and #workforcedevelopment. Walz could have elaborated on Harris’ skills-first priorities in her #OpportunityEconomy plan, while Vance could have explained how a second Trump term would prioritize skills, given the former president’s first-term efforts on #skillsfirsthiring and #apprenticeships. In our June 2024 voter survey, less than half of voters told us they are satisfied with the attention that candidates are giving to education and employment issues this election year. And in our newest voter survey from September, 85% of registered voters say improving economic opportunities for workers and their families is a high priority, while one-third of independents said they don't trust either party to act on these issues. Texas, the eighth largest economy globally, was ranked as the best business climate for 2024 by Business Facilities. The company's 20th annual rankings report noted that Texas welcomed more than 1,200 expansion and relocation projects in 2023. The growth is expected to create nearly $60 billion in capital investment and over 35,000 jobs. While 24 companies relocated their headquarters to Texas from 2023 through April 2024, the Lone Star State led the country in foreign direct investment for 2023 with $20.3 billion in capital investment across 235 projects. Last week, Governor Abbott also announced Texas added jobs at a faster rate over the past 12 months than the nation as a whole. May employment data released by the Texas Workforce Commission shows Texas reached a new all-time high with the largest labor force ever in the state’s history at 15,262,600 people. The number of Texans working, including the self-employed, also hit a new peak at 14,655,700. It marks the 10th consecutive month of record-high job levels in the state.

OREGON BUSINESS & INDUSTRY: FUTURE OF THE OREGON ECONOMY I was glad to be able to attend the Oregon Business & Industry Association (OBI) event recently at which various panelists discussed the current state of the Oregon economy and the potential opportunities to spur on more business and job growth in our state. The event was hosted by Moss Adams in Downtown Portland and included a large number of businesses interested in creating a future which is more prosperous and inclusive. In many ways, it was a follow up on the Oregon Competitiveness Book which OBI has put out for 2024. If you haven’t had a chance to see it, you might want to check out this link: https://lnkd.in/gcRWjTqr. There was a lively discussion on how we could create statewide policies which could help retain and attract our manufacturers so that we can compete with states such as Nevada and Arizona for jobs and that policy decisions by the state and local governments in terms of State incentives, shovel-ready industrial land, and workforce strategies can make a measurable difference.  The discussion included Measure 118 which is on the ballot in November. If this hasn’t gotten on your radar yet, you might want to see what OBI and various business leaders are saying about this ballot measure which you can view here: https://lnkd.in/gaQ7E6ae. It is very clear to me that with the right aspirational public private partnerships, the future of Oregon can be more prosperous. We can become more competitive for jobs. We can grow more Oregonians into the middle class.
