Since graduating in February, I've thrown myself into the job hunt. Eight biomedical companies, countless interviews – things seemed promising. But then came the disappointment. Two hospitals left me feeling deflated, and today, a dream company email arrived. It wasn't the offer I'd hoped for, but at least it was an answer, a courtesy rarely seen these days. Here's the rub: companies expect graduates to be these practical wizards, armed with every skill imaginable. University, they assume, equips us for everything. Sadly, that's not reality. As a fresh face in every interview room, I've realized it's a whole different ball game – far tougher than I anticipated. They want two to three years of experience, from someone who just stepped out of a world of assignments and exams. It's like being thrown into a marathon without any training, all while maintaining a perfect GPA. There's no room to develop new skills, to chase passions – it's a constant numbers game. Going into interviews, I know companies want someone who can hit the ground running. But universities only focus on the first impression – will this student be a good fit? There's no guidance on navigating the real world, no preparation for the shift from textbooks to the daily grind. Here's the thing: I may be green, but I'm a fast learner. I'm adaptable, ready to take on any challenge because I have to learn. This university system hasn't equipped me for the practicalities of work, but that doesn't mean I can't contribute. My message to everyone out there: Give fresh grads a chance! We might lack experience, but we're eager sponges, ready to soak up knowledge. We bring youthful energy and a fresh perspective, something that might just surprise you. Remember, it takes courage to step out and become who you truly are, and that applies to both graduates and employers. Let's break this cycle of demanding experience for entry-level positions.
