A lot of RICS APC Candidates get bogged down when it comes to getting started and accelerating their journey to chartership (MRICS). They obsess over the granular detail like study lists, choosing optional competencies, case study topics or CPD records. I'm not saying these are not valuable or important to meeting RICS requirements, however there is 1 x BIG PICTURE consideration that often RICS APC candidates overlook which will help you fast-track your way to becoming a chartered quantity surveyor. GETTING THE BREADTH AND DEPTH OF EXPERIENCE. The RICS APC process is an experience based assessment. And often RICS APC Assessors start questioning at level 3 experience (not level 1 quick fire questions). Assessors want to understand what you have done, how you have done it, what was the rationale for choosing that option, what was the outcome and lessons learnt. All very specific to your own experience on real life projects. There is no room for plagiarism - this is about you and your own experience. So with this in mind, map out how you are going to gain this experience, and to the minimum thresholds set by the RICS. If you have experience gaps, find a way to fill them. Do you need to spend more time pre-contract cost planning? Or post-contract commercial management? Bottom line - plan for your own experience and be proactive in getting it. Are you submitting your RICS APC Final Assessment documents later this month? Here are five tips that will help you get everything submitted ahead of the deadline: 1. Finalising your submission. Complete your documents in the next week to the best of your ability - don't leave it too late for feedback, which inevitably takes longer than you'd expect. 2. Review the RICS APC candidate guide. Be clear on exactly what you need to submit and the correct format to avoid last-minute stress. 3. Communicate with your supervisor and counsellor. Tell them what you need from them between now and the submission date. Put reminders in diaries for tasks, such as sign-offs. 4. Don't go it alone. Find other people who are going through the process to share tips, tricks and accountability. 5. Don't neglect good habits. You will have formed a good routine around the APC in preparing your submission documents. Start your revision straight away so as not to lose momentum. APC candidates preparing to submit your application to become a Chartered Surveyor with RICS? Before you hit submit, don't forget to gather your Proposer and Seconders!   As a reminder, RICS requires all APC candidates to have one proposer and two seconders who can vouch for their professionalism, expertise, and character. These individuals play a crucial role in supporting your application and ensuring you meet the required standards for RICS membership.   The proposer and seconders all must be MRICS or FRICS (they can be a friend or family member as long as they are an RICS member). At least one out of the three need to be from a separate organisation with the candidate. Today the Standards and Regulation Board (SRB) is launching an important consultation where we are seeking the views of RICS members and the public on the right framework to support the ongoing competence of RICS professionals through continuing professional development (CPD).     CPD is an essential tool for public confidence in the profession and to ensure members remain fit to practice by continuing to develop knowledge and skills as industry practices change and develop. It also plays a key role in career development and the steady improvement to standards of practice. We have a current framework which has worked well for over a decade and requires a number of hours of CPD to be recorded each year. However, we believe that regular review helps to ensure continued relevance, so we have asked a steering group to review this framework and consider if it needs to be updated in the light of developments and expectations over that time.    The Steering Group, ably led by Peter Smith, FRICS, has spoken to RICS regional boards across the world, surveyed members and looked at other professions. They have developed a set of proposals for change on which the Board now wants your views before we make any final decisions. I stress that the SRB recognises the importance of the support of the profession for any changes to CPD, so this consultation exercise is exactly that; and if we decide to make changes, these will not take effect before 2026.    Please read the consultation document and the results of the Steering Group's preliminary survey at https://lnkd.in/dPv_RaEc and do share your thoughts with us.

A Vision for a Member-Led RICS: Building Bridges, Driving Value As a Chartered Surveyor and RICS Registered Valuer with a deep-rooted commitment to our profession, I am running for RICS Governing Council because our profession is at a critical juncture. The RICS has the potential to be a dynamic, member-led force that shapes the built environment. However, we must be bold in our position. To ensure that the RICS remains at the forefront of the built environment, we must not only articulate the unique value we offer but also actively demonstrate it. By showcasing our expertise, leadership, and commitment to excellence, we can solidify our position as the go-to professional body. Moreover, collaborating with other professional bodies will benefit the industry as a whole. My second key priority is: Enhanced Inter-Professional Collaboration: Building stronger relationships with other professional bodies will foster a more unified and effective industry. I'll work to initiate and maintain collaborative efforts on key issues such as sustainability, governance, and ethics. Our goal should be to be an equal partner, contributing our unique perspectives and expertise while also learning from others. RICS has drawn up competencies in a generic way so that they can be applied to different areas of practice and geographical locations. The competencies are in two distinct categories; 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 – personal, interpersonal, professional practice and business skills common to all pathways and compulsory for all candidates. 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 - which are split into • Core competencies – primary skills of your chosen pathway • Optional competencies – selected as additional skill requirements for your pathway from a list of competencies relevant to that pathway.
