🌟Exciting News! 🌟 Today marks a historic moment for Economic Development Queensland (EDQ) as our new legislative powers come into effect. These changes empower us to play a pivotal role in Queensland's future by accelerating housing delivery and urban renewal. Under the new laws, EDQ is now equipped to deliver 1,300 additional homes, significantly boosting our forecast to 3,700 homes. We'll also approve an additional 15,000 homes in Priority Development Areas (PDAs), doubling our initial forecast to 29,000 homes. Inner West Council is using heritage policy as an excuse to push housing away from its most advantaged suburbs. Highlighted in yellow are the stations earmarked for more density, 4 of the bottom 5 when sorted by SEIFA disadvantage. Places like Marrickville and Ashfield are objectively great places to live and would be even better with more people, but this demonstrates that planning reinforces inequity not just between councils (where targets are lower in the east) but within them as well. How effective has the Duty to Cooperate been in the Greater Birmingham and Black Country Housing Market Area (GBBCHMA) in filling the strategic policy vacuum in the absence of regional plans?   Without any strategic level plan or agreement, it has been for the Duty to Cooperate to ensure the region’s housing needs are met in full, taking into account all of the sub region’s constraints – with a major shortfall persisting it has not been successful in significantly boosting housing delivery across the area. Data prepared by our Economics and Midlands Planning teams show the housing need and shortfall in GBBCHMA over the medium and longer term. Today JYAC's interim CEO, Rewi Lyall, spoke to members of the Joint Standing Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs about the importance of investing in on-country communities as the foundation for building economic self-determination. “More than ever people agree with the principle that ‘country needs people’, but the other side of that is that people need vibrant, attractive communities so they can live safe and happy lives on country,” Mr Lyall said. “The most efficient way to deliver ranger services in the most remote parts of our state is drawing from a labour force that lives locally.” Mr Lyall told the committee about JYAC’s comprehensive, Martu-led plan for their on-country communities of Punmu, Parnngurr and Kunawarritji. The Community Led Design Outcomes Report details the design of culturally appropriate houses, community infrastructure and town layouts for each of the three communities. They have been designed to create space for all generations of Martu to live on-ngurra and meet their education, health and employment needs. “Investing in communities will provide a foundation for Martu to build their own local circular economies, which in turn will support the viability not just of ranger programs, but also tourism, arts, building maintenance and other Martu business ventures,” said Mr Lyall. “Additionally, investing in viable on-ngurra communities reduces overcrowding in nearby towns, and its associated problems. “Many Martu say their preference is to live on country, but they can’t because there isn’t enough safe, liveable housing available for them. “Martu want to live in dry communities, they want bring their children to communities where schools are exceeding attendance targets and seeing continual improvement in educational achievements. “There are three levels of housing standards: safe and working, liveable, and attractive. Right now, half of Martu on-country housing doesn’t even reach the standard of safe and working. “Until Martu have liveable housing and community infrastructure, they will continue to be denied the opportunities for self-determination that other Western Australians take for granted.” #MartuRebuilding #martu #housing #firstnations #ngurra #aboriginalRangers https://lnkd.in/gWEvSEuN

Planning decisions for local development in Mid and East Antrim are made in less time than anywhere else in Northern Ireland, recent figures show. The average application made in the borough takes just 10.2 weeks to complete compared to a regional average of 19.2 weeks. Statistics released by the Department for Infrastructure show Mid and East Antrim to have the shortest turnaround time for local applications out of all 11 local authorities, with the regional target currently 15 weeks. Chair of Council’s Planning Committee, Alderman Robert Logan, welcomed the latest statistics. He said: “I would like to congratulate our entire team of Planning Officers and members of the Planning Committee for continuing to set the standard when it comes to local development decisions.” “Since the reform of how planning applications are processed in Northern Ireland back in 2015, Mid and East Antrim has consistently led the way in best practice and innovation, and I commend all those involved.” “Mid and East Antrim is passionate about sustainable development that protects and enhances our natural environment, safeguards our built heritage, supports retail growth and addresses need.” “Excellent planning practices are vital to supporting the delivery of Council’s number one priority – growing the local economy – and that has been evidenced by a number of key developments and initiatives progressing in recent months. Congratulations to the Nulato Village (https://lnkd.in/enCSKAbj) on receiving a $3.99 million RAISE grant to fund the planning, permitting, and engineering design for the commercial port development and bank armoring on the Yukon River, as well as dock facilities in Mukluk Slough. This funding builds on federal investments, including a $320,000 Bureau Rural and Tribal Assistance Pilot Program grant awarded last fall. Both grants are funding design of improvements to a port facility that will improve safety both water side and land side, improve logistics for vessels and the products they transport, and increase economic opportunities for the community. The grant is part of the $1.8 billion in awards from the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) discretionary grant program for 148 projects across the country announced by U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
