Zūm is thrilled to kick off the school year in Branford, Connecticut. Last week, drivers, staff and community members gathered at a launch event at the Zum bus yard. These events aren’t simply parties — they’re a recognition of our teams, how hard they work, and the final step in a monthslong process to get everyone in lockstep before the first day of school. In March, Zum announced its transportation partnership with Branford Public Schools — yet another expansion for Zum, making 2024-2025 a banner year. “First, it’s important to celebrate our team in Branford, which has been working around the clock to hire and train the best drivers around,” said Liz Sanchez, Executive Vice President of Student Transportation at Zum. “That will make sure we’re delivering safe, reliable rides to and from school every day this school year. On top of our cutting-edge technology, it’s an unbeatable combination, one that will bring peace of mind to parents and improve the well-being of children, families and school administrators alike.” Learn more about the partnership and the event: https://lnkd.in/gWVEfqGG #BacktoSchool #studenttransportation

To make it easier for K-12 students in Arlington County, VA to #TakeTransit, county officials have picked up the tab so they can now ride Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) buses for free thanks to a collaboration between the county and transit agency. The county began supporting rides for students in 2022. In 2023, student ridership from January to September soared 77% percent to more than 108K trips. The program provides more connectivity throughout Arlington and the DC region and sets the stage for lifelong transit riders. bit.ly/4bfb8lv

The yellow school bus has remained remarkably consistent over the past century. But as a smaller share of kids ride the bus, its role is shifting, Lora Kelley writes. https://lnkd.in/ekrwUByj “In 2022, only about a third of students rode the bus to school, down from roughly 37 percent five years before,” Kelley writes. “More students are getting dropped off by car or driving to class—a trend that accelerated after the coronavirus pandemic began, especially among the children of college-educated parents.” But the legacy of the school bus is mixed. “The bus was once a transformative force in American education, enabling a switch from highly local, one-room schoolhouses,” Antero Garcia, an education professor at Stanford University, told Kelley. “And in the years following Brown v. Board of Education, buses became a potent symbol of desegregation.” But the bus can also be a place of stress for students, who can face bullying from peers or discipline from drivers—“many of whom struggle with low pay and odd working hours,” Kelley writes. The school bus has also hardly improved over the decades. “Its stagnation has come about in part because administrators tend to focus on interventions that improve test scores ‘rather than a dusty old bus,’ Garcia said. He also noted that ‘there’s an assumption that school buses are for working-class kids, largely kids of color.’” And on top of it all, schools face a driver shortage. The number of drivers is declining, while the number of students goes up. “Moreover, the school-bus system doesn’t serve all students—a 2020 study of New York City’s school-bus ridership found that Black and Hispanic K–6 students are more likely to attend schools where buses are unavailable,” Kelly writes. “Still, some school districts are making changes,” Kelly continues, such as efforts to introduce electric buses. “The bus is a liminal site: Bus time is part of the school day, but it’s not class time … This freedom makes the bus worth looking at in full, as a meaningful, rich space for kids in America.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/ekrwUByj 📸: AWSeebaran / Getty

Let's work together to keep our kids safe this school year! As the school year begins, let's prioritize the safety of our children. Here are some key tips for both motorists and students to help ensure everyone stays safe: For Motorists: Avoid Distractions: If you're driving near a school bus, put away your phone, turn down the radio, and stay fully focused. Kids can be unpredictable, so it's important to stay alert. Watch for Bus Lights: Always pay attention to a school bus's lights. Yellow means it's about to stop—so should you. Red lights and an extended stop arm mean the bus has stopped, and children are getting on or off. In this case, all vehicles must stop. Stay Observant: When a bus is parked, be cautious of students crossing in front of or behind it. Blind spots can make it difficult to see children, as well as other pedestrians and cyclists. For Students, Parents, and Guardians: Arrive Early: Students should be at the bus stop at least five minutes before the scheduled time. Stand a safe distance (five steps) from the curb and wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching. If you miss the bus, never chase it. Stay Alert: Before crossing the street, students should look both ways and wait for the driver to signal when it’s safe. Limit distractions like headphones or cellphones at the bus stop. Avoid Blind Spots: Teach students to stay safe around the bus—never walk too close to the front, take three steps away from the side, and avoid the back where visibility is limited. 🚌With children returning to school over the next several weeks, let's not forget the importance of school bus safety as the new school year approaches! 🛑 At OHLA USA, we are committed to keeping our communities safe—whether it's on the job site or on the road. Remember to always stop for school buses, stay alert in school zones, and prioritize safety for our children. 1) Stay in the Safe Zone: Children should stand at least 10 feet from the curb while waiting for the bus. This helps them avoid the bus driver's blind spots and reduces the risk of being hit by the bus. 2) Follow the Driver's Signal: Children should always wait for the bus driver to signal that it is safe before crossing the street. 3) Cross in Front of the Bus: Always cross at least 10 feet in front of the bus where the driver can see the child. Never cross behind the bus. 4) Be Alert in School Zones: Slow down and be extra cautious in school zones and near bus stops. 5) Stop for School Buses: All drivers must stop when a school bus extends its stop sign and flashes its red lights. Never pass a stopped school bus. 6) Stay Alert for Kids: Watch for children who may dart into the street, especially in residential areas and near bus stops. 🚌 #SafeAndSound #SchoolBusSafety #SafetyFirst #OHLAUSA #BackToSchool
