The Architecture Apprenticeship Handbook The RIBA has published ' The Architecture Apprenticeship Handbook,' featuring valuable tips from our very own Anastasija Kostileva: 1.     Connect early with peers to exchange ideas. 2.     Apply work skills to academic tasks with a strong research & design focus. 3.     Always ask questions! Our Director’s advice also features, highlighting the importance of business acumen for emerging professionals - exposure apprentices benefit from during their time in practice. As early adopters of the apprenticeship programme we are proud to be contributors to the handbook. Anastasija's journey has been a significant success for both her and the practice since she enrolled in an apprenticeship with The London South Bank University back in 2019. This was the early days of apprenticeships and felt like a leap of faith for both Anastasija and the practice; very few universities were offering them, there were no graduates to provide reassurance and they require a significant investment and four-year commitment. However, recognising apprenticeships pivotal role in making a career in architecture more accessible, Anastasija enrolled with the support of our Directors. “My goal was always to become an architect so I knew I couldn’t be a Part I forever but I really enjoyed working in practice. Real projects, real issues and colleagues there to support you. It motivated me and reinforced the idea that architecture is what I want to do. Doing my apprenticeship at Bell Phillips was my best professional decision so far. It was challenging, especially during lockdown, but my job provided stability and motivation. Whenever I doubted my university work, I remembered that I handle more complex tasks at work." This April marked a year since Anastasija qualified as an Architect and we are very proud of her journey to that long-desired (and deserved) title. Following in her footsteps, Architectural Assistant, Eleanor Hollis has recently enrolled in an apprenticeship scheme with the University of Cambridge whilst continuing her fantastic work with us here in Wapping. I've been hearing people talk about a skills shortage in our industry for years and years. Bit of a broken "record", yes record not CD or MP3 file, one of those circular vinyl black things, that's how many years. Interested in taking on a higher apprentice?   PlanBEE (Plan for Built Environment Education) is an industry driven higher apprenticeship, seeking employers from within the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) sector across London. Organisations such as Cundall, have taken on three PlanBEE apprentices so far and are planning a further two for the September 2024 intake.   PlanBEE is a cost effective and innovative way to recruit and develop talented young people. PlanBEE has been designed by employers to meet industry needs, with a focus on leadership, economics, design, technology and production. It provides apprentices with the opportunity to gain a greater understanding and appreciation of multi-disciplinary roles and collaborative working across the AEC sector.   98% of PlanBEE graduates have progressed to permanent roles in the sector.   PlanBEE are looking for more companies to sponsor apprentices, companies such as cost consultants, architects, engineers, constructors, planners, managers, etc. in London and would be great to have you onboard. In my opinion: I have been having this debate with people for years and I am not ashamed to say I did not got to university and I have seen the benefits first hand. With tuition fee's supposedly going to increase in the UK and the growing addition to more people discovering they're neurodiverse I want to campaign for those that maybe weighing up options of an apprenticeship or planning on going onto Uni. Don't think that being an apprentice is a dirty word or looked down upon in this day and age and the below shows the benefits of making the leap. If you want a career where you need a degree then do it, go to uni live your best life and get that job. And it's true the corporate companies will require you to have one but there is a world that exists where you can grow into a incredible person without one. I can only speak in my industry where we are running out of skilled trades across the board and also running out of junior PM's contractor side. The skilled shortage in the UK is a real issue and one where apprenticeships can help fix the problem. It should be viewed on bar with a degree as the experience is the same IN MY OPINION. Doing an apprenticeship has not only helped me to have a jump start in my career due to the on the job training and experience but also allowed me to be financially stable and debt free! It also enabled me to juggle tasks, such as working alongside studying and allowed me to become more organised, have strong time management skills and also develop my professionalism at a very young age. If you are ever unsure about choosing an apprenticeship or going to university. I always ask the question of: “do you know what you want to do in life?”. If the answer is yes, then I follow with “is there apprenticeships available in the field you want to go in?” If the answer is yes again then I always push for an apprenticeship. University for me would have been somewhere where I would go to find out these answers.
