Do you struggle with behavioral or situational interview questions? Many pharmacist, management and director candidates do too. They know they need to take advantage of these critical moments but aren’t sure how. Storytelling is key. It’s a learned skill that helps you connect with your interviewer and highlight what makes you special. Shine in your next interview by converting 3-4 experiences into powerful stories by leveraging 6 keys: 1) BE ARTICULATE by structuring your answer using a proven format such as the STAR or CARL method. 2) BE ON POINT by capturing attention and keeping it by answering the actual question the interviewer is asking. 3) BE RELATABLE by tailoring responses to the person you are speaking to and sharing the emotions people are feeling in the experience. 4) BE CONCISE by articulating your response in 2-minutes to demonstrate your ability to simplify complex information and prioritize details. 5) BE ENGAGING by asking for feedback during your interview. 6) BE PREPARED thoughtful responses to specific follow-up questions. Are you gearing up for an interview and unsure how to answer those tricky behavioral questions like, "Tell me about a time when you faced a challenge at work?" Don't worry – the STAR Technique is here to help you answer these questions with confidence and clarity! 🌟 Behavioral interview questions are designed to assess how you've handled situations in the past because it's believed that your past behavior is a good predictor of future performance. The STAR method gives your answers structure and ensures you hit all the key points. Here's a breakdown of how to use STAR effectively: 1️⃣ S - Situation Start by setting the scene. Briefly describe the context of the situation to give the interviewer background. 🔸 Example: "In my previous role as a project manager, my team faced a tight deadline on a major client project..." 2️⃣ T - Task Next, explain the specific task or challenge you were responsible for in that situation. 🔸 Example: "It was my responsibility to reorganize the team and allocate resources efficiently to meet the deadline." 3️⃣ A - Action This is the most critical part! Describe the exact steps you took to handle the situation. Focus on what you did and the skills you used. Be clear and concise. 🔸 Example: "I implemented a daily check-in system with the team to monitor progress and adjusted workflows to ensure high-priority tasks were completed first. I also communicated regularly with the client to manage their expectations." 4️⃣ R - Result Finally, share the outcome. Highlight the positive results your actions led to. Whenever possible, quantify the results to make a stronger impact. 🔸 Example: "As a result, we completed the project three days ahead of the deadline, exceeding the client's expectations. This led to a 15% increase in business from the client over the next quarter." 💡 Pro Tip: Keep your answers concise but detailed enough to showcase your skills and contributions. Focus on your role in the outcome and avoid generalizing team efforts unless it's about leadership or collaboration. The STAR method is an excellent tool to structure your responses to questions like: "Describe a time when you worked under pressure." "Tell me about a time you showed leadership." "Have you ever had to handle a conflict in the workplace?" Why is this method so effective? It ensures your answers are clear, logical, and impactful, giving the interviewer a complete picture of your skills, decision-making process, and how you deliver results. So next time you're asked a behavioral question in an interview, remember to shine like a STAR and leave a lasting impression! 🌟 🔗 Looking for more interview tips? I always give 1 piece of advice to candiates going into an interview. Spend some time preparing, and then before the interview (an hour, a day), push all of your prep aside, and focus on being yourself. 🧘🏼♀️ Connecting with the interviewer and being authentic will get you everywhere. But for the prep stage, here’s what to focus on, in order of importance: 1️⃣ High level research on the company & your interviewer. Read the website and the interviewer’s LinkedIn, and come up with some compelling questions. Don’t go overboard if you have limited time. It’s better to be informed & curious than over prepared & nervous. 2️⃣ Jot down specific examples of wins, initiatives you’ve spearheaded and lessons you’ve learned, as they relate to the job you’re interviewing for. The best way to show your expertise in an interview is with examples. This prep will help you recall specifics & avoid rambling. 3️⃣ Practice your answers to common interview questions. Especially those pesky ones like “what’s your greatest weakness?” 🙄 Yes, some people still ask that. 4️⃣ Deeper dive into the company, its competitors, the founders, etc. Strong preparation signals strong interest. That’s one of the top things hiring managers look for because it shows you’ll be dedicated & passionate about your work. Just make sure your research fuels your curiosity rather than a need to impress. More junior candidates will spout out facts and go on tangents just to prove they’ve done the work, at the expense of connecting with the interviewer. Anything to add? Change? #interviewtips #jobsearch

How can you possibly be ready to answer every behavioral interview question⁉️ Many of my clients preparing for interviews want to give up before they even start. What’s the use when there’s no way to know what kind of interview questions an interviewer is going to ask? 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀. There is a way to plan and prepare effectively. 🧐 The first thing to do is consider the types of situations your interview is going to be most interested in. Most behavioral interview questions fall into five categories: Adaptability, Leadership, Teamwork, Problem-Solving, and Conflict Resolution. Think about the role you’re applying for and consider which experiences and skills they are looking for. Are you applying for a management position? Maybe you should prepare multiple examples for leadership and teamwork based questions. Going for a technical role where you need to work on your own? Come up with a few good stories about your problem solving skills. My advice is to come up with at least two example for each type of question. The idea is not memorize a script, but to create a strong outline of a real example that can be adjusted based on the question. Many people suggest the STAR structure for outlining your answers, but I believe you can streamline this to 𝘾𝘼𝙍: 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙭𝙩, 𝘼𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 & 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙨. The key details for each section include: 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁: when this situation took place, where you were working, what your role was and what problem you faced. 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: what you did personally, even if working in a team, try to highlight your individual contribution. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀: what happened because of your action, this is the most important part of your answer, when possible, try to think of an example with quantifiable results, something that impacted the business overall or improved things for your colleagues. Using this structure helps you stick to the key details and get through your examples without rambling. 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘺 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵? 😏 Preparing and practicing your stories in advance allows you to pick strong examples that highlight your top skills and achievements and turn difficult questions into opportunities to show why you’re a great fit. 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁 until the interview begins to start thinking of examples‼️ Write down a simple outline for 7-10 stories today and I guarantee your interview will go smoother. I’d be happy to help you review and practice them once you’re done.💪💪💪

Unsure of how to tackle behavioural interview questions? Behavioural interview questions are common and there are so many, so it is worth working through a couple and keeping it as part of your interview prep arsenal. Here's one to try: Talk us through a time when you needed to think on your feet to get out of a difficult situation. 📑 The answer is best when it is aligned to the role you are interviewing for. When reading the spec, consider situations that you may have experience that would relate to this space. 📔 Unpack the scenario to be sure you have explained the situation and the context surrounding it. Does it explain the the level, tight deadlines, severity, sensitivity etc. 💡 Next, list all the research, decisions and actions that you took. Remember to include delegation (where applicable) and the need to utilise other resources. ✏ Explain the outcome and the lessons taken that could prevent this in the future. ⁉ Be prepared for follow up questions and role play some of these as part of your preparation. 🚫 Keep in mind that the question could be a situation that didn't get resolved, so have some good examples and lessons in mind. #interviewtips #performability

I'm reading Jeff Wetzler's new book, "Ask." In it, Wetzler discusses three ways of listening when interviewing someone: listening for content, emotions, and actions. Most of us focus primarily on listening for content. We're seeking specific information from the candidate to determine whether they have experience and a track record of success solving challenges similar to those they'd face in our company. We want facts and data about accomplishments. Yet, according to Wetzler, we may miss essential information if we aren't attuned to emotions and actions during the interview. Listening to emotions during an interview can allow one to discern motivation and energy. Typically, what we're best at energizes us. If you were to interview me, you'd notice that my energy goes up when discussing my experience creatively building talent functions that help companies achieve their business strategy. My energy would decrease when discussing my experience with bureaucratic and slow-moving organizations. Reading that energy or emotion when listening to a candidate relate their experience provides another layer of information about what motivates a particular candidate. Wetzler also mentions listening for actions. Does a candidate take a consultative or performative approach during an interview? Do they engage or only respond? Are they proactive or more passive? Do they pick up information by listening for emotion and action? Do they check their understanding? How well do they listen? I recommend the book, "Ask." It's an interesting read, particularly for those of us who approach interviewing as a craft.

Do you know that the STAR method may be holding you back from nailing your TPM interviews? 😮 When I started interviewing candidates, I observed the nuances of their responses that helped me better connect with their stories and assess if they were the right candidates. 💕 The best example stories were the ones that were highly engaging with a compelling narrative that showcased how the candidate overcame challenges and used their skills to achieve results, surpassing the traditional STAR Method for interview responses. 🙌 While the STAR method serves as a popular framework for answering interview questions, relying solely on it may fall short in today's modern dynamic workplace. ⭐ Incorporating POWERful storytelling for interview responses adds depth and authenticity, enhancing your ability to connect with interviewers and leave a lasting impression. 💪 Learn more about the POWERful Storytelling framework and crack your TPM interviews. 🚀 #tpm #technicalprogrammanagement #programmanagement #interviewprep #starmethod Check out the complete version of the POWERful Storytelling framework with examples as part of the Cracking TPM Interview course at TPM Academy.
