Happening tomorrow, hosted by Prevent Watch! RSI's I. Sabah Hussain will be part of this webinar. UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) reports: "British counter-terrorism strategies “have created an atmosphere of suspicion towards members of Muslim communities and continue to have a negative impact on the exercise of their rights to freedom of expression, education, health and freedoms of religion and peaceful assembly.” The UN published this report less than a week after the British Home Secretary Yvette Cooper commissioned a rapid review to inform a new “counter-extremism” strategy on tackling “extremist ideologies”.

Can our actions be motivated by a reward or punishment scale? This is a question that has been debated for centuries, and it is especially relevant in today's world where we are constantly bombarded with different ideologies and beliefs. But let's take a step back and ask ourselves, what is the difference between terrorism and extremism? Understanding the difference is crucial. Extremism is linked to thought, while terrorism is linked to action. Extremism is rooted in political, social, or religious beliefs, while terrorism is characterized by violent behaviors that aim to intimidate or harm us. Involvement in terrorism is driven by several factors, including a need for significance, a narrative that provides a means to achieve it, and a network of like-minded individuals who make violence-justifying cognitions perceived as morally acceptable. Motivations for violent extremism are varied and many and usually relate to specific ideologies, environmental or economic concerns, ethnic or separatist causes, or more than one issue. It's essential to focus on positive reinforcement, encouraging good behavior with positive feedback, and helping each other through our struggles. Let's work together to create a society where violent actions are not acceptable. At the end of the day, our actions should not be driven by fear of punishment or hope for a reward. Instead, we should strive to make a positive impact and work towards a better society. Let's remember to support and help each other, even in times of mistake or misunderstanding. Remembering 9/11 all the lives that could of been saved educate yourself, your family your Community and everyone else. Please help stop Violent Extremism Ideologies. 📚 Lesson 6 | Human rights abuses perpetuated during counter-terrorism operations can drive people into the hands of recruiters. Indiscriminate arrests and abuses undermine trust between conservative, religious communities, returnees, and the government. These practices reinforce feelings of exclusion and stigmatization, making individuals feel like 'refugees' in their own country. Long detentions without trial are seen as oppression, increasing mistrust. Fear of arrest hinders participation in P/CVE activities, preventing the establishment of crucial community allies. To address these issues, we facilitated open dialogues between community leaders, former fighters, and local authorities to rebuild trust and address grievances. 💬 What is "borderline content"? As 2023 comes to an end, we are revisiting some of this year's top episodes of the Tech Against Terrorism podcast. As a law student, the journey is indeed challenging. The commitment to reading case studies, perusing voluminous books, and attending lectures often over a cup of coffee or tea, becomes a routine when one chooses the path of law. Why do I mention this? The reason is that despite the demanding schedule, I managed to complete a workshop. It has been almost a month since its completion, and only recently have I found the time to share this experience. I had the opportunity to attend a workshop titled “Legal Frontiers in Preventing & Countering Violent Extremism”. This workshop was organized by the Debate & Discussions Society in collaboration with the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism. The workshop provided insights into another aspect of violent extremism and strategies to control it. It sheds light on how to identify potential signs of violent extremism in an individual at the earliest instance and the measures that can be taken to assist such individuals. Although the workshop was only two hours long, the knowledge and insights gained were substantial and I believe they will be beneficial for my future endeavors. #unitednations #delhiuniversity #UnitedNationsOfficeofCounterTerrorism
