This morning I had the absolute privilege to lead a 90 minute workshop with 24 of the 25 members of #GovTechTalent Cohort 8. These are young people at the start of their careers, transitioning from the halls of academia to the challenges of the modern bureaucracy - even more challenging when a new government is taking the reins. My topic was “Navigating an ambiguous and dynamic work environment”, and I used an assignment I am working on right now as our class exercise, for some real life experience. I broke them into small groups, and we looked at 3 stages in delivering to a request: 1. Commissioning 2. Managing the unexpected while doing the work 3. Delivering your product and considering next steps (including what you would do differently, next time!) The participants rose to the challenge, with great ideas about what to do when, for example, you can’t access the information you need because it is in a secured system – or the Minister wants the product tomorrow (well before the agreed deadline!). This is the workshop I wish I’d had when making this transition myself. It was fun to do, and the participants engaged well and thanked me for it.
