In the European sand belt, agricultural soils face significant challenges including droughts and acidification, exacerbated by climate change. These issues have profound implications for current agricultural practices and future sustainability. To address these challenges, Rijkswaterstaat and Provincie Gelderland are collaborating on the LIFE CO2SAND project. This initiative aims to mitigate soil degradation by strategically applying a thin layer of clay to increase the lutum content in sandy soils to 8%. The project's objective is to treat 700 hectares of agricultural land by 2027, effectively enhancing soil resilience and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. How do they plan on doing this? 🌱 The #biodiversity financing gap exists mainly due to a knowledge gap: the valuation of ecosystem services that provide for human well-being and quality of life. One of the most important ecosystem services is provided by soil as carbon sinks for climate regulation, storage for organic carbon, and aid in regulating atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. We estimate the socio-economic value of soil in Europe 🇪🇺 at about USD18.3trn (1.1x Europe’s GDP) through the greenhouse-gas emission channel. In our latest report, we look at five strategies that can enhance soil quality: three crop-management practices (cover cropping, no tillage and use of green manure) and two broader land-restoration techniques (agroforestry and sustainable forest management). Which strategy is the most cost-effective? Find out here: https://ow.ly/ZBzU50Rse2a Markus Zimmer Arne Holzhausen

It's #WorldSoilDay 2023 today. The soil is a complex eco-system. Scientists estimate that there are more living organisms in 1 tablespoon of soil than there are people on Earth. Soil and water are the essential duo for plant growth and nutrient uptake. They have a profound impact on our world. Rainfed agriculture, which occupies 80% of cultivated land, contributes to 60% of global food production. Soil health and the quality and availability of water are closely linked. Implementing effective sustainable soil management practices is key to improving water availability and promoting soil biodiversity for healthy, organically enriched soils. When both systems are in sync, the land can better withstand extreme climate events such as droughts, floods, and dust storms. Integrated soil and water management practices are necessary to improve the resilience of the ecosystems that support life on Earth. Happy to work for a company, Bayer | Crop Science that believes in regenerative agriculture, in which emphasis is placed on building and maintaining healthy, fertile soil. This involves practices such as cover cropping, crop rotation, minimal soil disturbance, and the use of organic matter to enhance soil structure and microbial activity. #WorlSoilDay #soil #soilhealth #waterandsoil #agvocates #NGINeers #youthinag #nextgeneration #water

Is #RegenerativeAgriculture going to be regulated? Lack of a consistent and accepted definition has risks, including confusion, the weakening of the term, and a loss of credibility through “greenwashing”. Whether a 3rd party regulatory body arises or not, we should work towards a more accepted definition which is quantifiable and based on sound science. The SAI Platform has a 4-part rubric around the main areas of: ➡ Soil Health (erosion, nutrients, etc.) ➡ Water (aquifer overuse, sediment, etc.) ➡ Biodiversity (deforestation, habitats, etc.) ➡ Climate (nitrogen and energy use) We look forward to working with actors up and down the supply chain to advance understanding of this important idea. #WeeklyCOCERAL

Land degradation: Ever wondered what's behind the term "land degradation"? What is Land Degradation? Land degradation is the gradual deterioration of land quality, affecting its ability to support life and ecosystem services. It's a pressing environmental issue that demands our attention. Causes of Land Degradation: Human activities often contribute to this problem. Deforestation, improper agricultural practices, overgrazing, and urbanization can strip the land of its natural resources, leading to degradation. Impact on the Environment: Land degradation doesn't just harm the soil; it has far-reaching consequences. Loss of biodiversity reduced agricultural productivity, increased greenhouse gas emissions, and disrupted water cycles are just a few of the ripple effects. 🌿 The good news? Knowledge is power! By understanding the intricacies of land degradation, we empower ourselves to make positive changes. Stay tuned for more insights on how we can collectively combat this environmental challenge! 🌎💚 #LandDegradationAwareness #ProtectOurPlanet #EnvironmentalEducation

Paper making contributes to deforestation through the high demand for wood pulp, the primary raw material. Trees, mainly from old-growth forests, are felled to meet this demand. Deforestation occurs as these forests are cleared, disrupting ecosystems and habitats of numerous species. Additionally, the logging process often involves clear-cutting, removing entire sections of forest at once, leading to soil erosion, loss of biodiversity, and disruption of water cycles. Moreover, deforestation releases carbon stored in trees, contributing to climate change. Unsustainable logging practices exacerbate these effects, perpetuating the cycle of deforestation and environmental degradation.
