The storm and high water season started on 1 October 2024. Rijkswaterstaat is making sure that the Netherlands is well protected against high water. We do this by testing storm surge barriers, carrying out constant coastal maintenance and ensuring that flood defences are in good condition. A large proportion of the Netherlands is below sea level, which makes us vulnerable. Safety first: check out how we do this ➡ https://lnkd.in/erqEjtU6

Some countries in Southeast Asia are turning to the Netherlands for ways to tackle rising tides and floods stemming from climate change. This exchange of knowledge works both ways, as Channel News Asia showed in a video report. Rijkswaterstaat and Deltares are involved. Are you also interested in working together? The water sector is fragile. Digitisation is creating a new, increased risk in operational technology. Risk awareness of digital threats in operational technology is relatively low, while the impact of a cyber-attack on operational technology is potentially immense. To deal with this fragility, ATHENA was created. ATHENA aims to uptake innovative solutions through co-creation, implementation and embedding of targeted competence upskilling modules. Want to know more about ATHENA, and curious about the origin of the name of the project? Read more here >> https://lnkd.in/eaSgGJ-Y #rijkswaterstaat #digitalisation #infrastructure

Transforming Road Traffic Management in the Netherlands 🚗 The world of road-traffic management is evolving. Look at the technological and social developments that are taking place around you, in our cars and in the infrastructure, for instance. Rijkswaterstaat's response to this is the CHARM program. CHARM aims to revolutionise traffic management with the implementation of a new IT platform, DYNAC. This initiative enhances safety and efficiency on Dutch roads by modernising traffic control systems across the country. Implemented in phases, CHARM ensures safe and smoothly flowing road traffic: now and in the future. Already active in several control centres, this system is crucial for maintaining and upgrading our road network efficiently. NAPSEA: Tackling nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) pollution from source to sea 🌊 Rijkswaterstaat is proud to be part of the NAPSEA project, addressing nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) pollution to safeguard our inland and coastal waters. This EU Horizon-funded initiative focuses on governance, pathways, and ecosystem health. By evaluating nutrient sources and reduction measures, NAPSEA aims to implement sustainable solutions for cleaner, healthier waters. Learn more on how NAPSEA will revolutionise the way we approach nutrient reduction here: https://lnkd.in/eZttKQ2c #sustainability #water #ecosystem #Rijkswaterstaat #NAPSEA #Horizon

In the European sand belt, agricultural soils face significant challenges including droughts and acidification, exacerbated by climate change. These issues have profound implications for current agricultural practices and future sustainability. To address these challenges, Rijkswaterstaat and Provincie Gelderland are collaborating on the LIFE CO2SAND project. This initiative aims to mitigate soil degradation by strategically applying a thin layer of clay to increase the lutum content in sandy soils to 8%. The project's objective is to treat 700 hectares of agricultural land by 2027, effectively enhancing soil resilience and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. How do they plan on doing this? On 16 August 2024, European sturgeon (Acipenser sturio) were again released into the Rhine. The Rhine Connects partners, Sportvisserij Nederland and ARK Rewilding Nederland, together with the World Wildlife Fund (Wereld Natuur Fonds (WWF-NL)), are conducting research into the reintroduction of the sturgeon. This enormous fish species, which can grow over 3 metres long and weigh 150 kg, was officially declared extinct in the Netherlands in 1953. Due to overfishing, intensive shipping, the laying of canals and pollution, the sturgeon could no longer navigate between the river and the sea. If the sturgeon can find its way again, it will positively impact both the sturgeon and the life of other fish in the Rhine. Since 2023, the sturgeon programme has been part of the Interreg programme DRV (De Rijn Verbindt / Der Rhein Verbindet). Read more about the research via: https://lnkd.in/geCFeVi4

Europe faces an era with multiple crises (e.g. climate change and biodiversity crises, wars) and there is an urgency to stick to the green, digital transformative change of the blue sector and EU interdependence. Therefore, EU member states join forces to stimulate impact-oriented research and innovation under the Horizon Europe programme. The vision of the partnership is: ✅By 2030: boost the transformation towards a climate-neutral, sustainable, productive and competitive blue economy; ✅By 2050: create and support the conditions for healthy oceans and seas for the people. Under the Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership, six co-funded calls are launched that will fund projects focused on providing knowledge and activating collaborations around the sustainable blue economy. The partnership seeks to engage stakeholders across ocean industry sectors, policy, scientific disciplines, and civil society.
