After having been a 2021 Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) Fellow, I am excited to have completed the year-long LCLD Alumni Sustainable Partnership Program (SPP) for the first Midwest Cohort. This program was designed to support new diverse law partners or senior associates - who often are unknowing or unequipped - in sustaining our practices by developing and/or growing legal business in order to tackle this next level of our career progression. If you’re not in private legal practice, you may not know or appreciate that one of the main jobs of a law partner is to build and/or grow new legal business. We’re supposed to be rainmakers! Yet, anyone who knows me can appreciate that I’m not a salesperson. I hate it. I’m a scientist turned lawyer. In fact, this very requirement is often what drives great lawyers in house, and I get it. Nonetheless, this is the challenging task of a private practice partner, and for so many personal reasons, I’m here for the challenge! I’m truly grateful to Robert Grey, Alyssa Yuen, and all those at LCLD, as well as the good folks at Harley-Davidson Motor Company (Paul Krause and Adraea Brown), Exelon (Calvin Butler and David Ralph), and Nationwide (Marilyn McClure- Demers), who sponsored the program. Bottom line, I’m in a legal business development grind right now. If you want to help me grow my legal practice, and continue to show value in having diverse partners in the law firm environment, I’d sure appreciate your help. I predict that this draconian legal maneuver will not hold for long. Why? It’s untenable for a university system to attract the best and brightest to campuses that do not reflect the reality of the students lives they have experienced until higher education. A DEI office can only shut down if the leadership is not bold enough to stand against tyranny. You can remove a DEI statement without closing the office. You can change the office name to continue the work. You can fight against the erroneous perception that entrance exams are the best way to identify talent and question notions about meritocracy. You are an institution of knowledge. I can't believe how three years have passed in the blink of an eye, and I am set to graduate next month from St Mary’s University, Twickenham with my LLB in Law. Today brought this reality even closer to me as I just received my marks for my extended essay dissertation, and I literally screamed in joy at seeing the high first marks on my work. My dissertation topic titled "Enhancing the United Kingdom's Responsibility in Preventing Healthcare Violations in Armed Conflict".
