STEEPLECHASE - THE SPECIALTY RACE YOU'RE GREAT AT. The steeplechase depicts the run of life in some ways. This race has 4 hurdles on the track, and one water jump. The 3000m version has a total of 28 hurdle jumps and 7 water jumps. You jump over the hurdles 28 times in total, and 7 times over the pool of the water jump. When jumping over the 4th hurdle, you sometimes land in the pool. A less than ideal situation because it slows you down. Just like in life. Sometimes you jump over hurdles and once in a while you jump over one and land in a pool. It's easy to get too critical over the not-so-ideal jump. And feel like the loss in momentum is unforgivable. The task is to remember that the hurdles you have overcome are more than the pools you have fallen into. 7 pools for every 28 jumps. Keep running. You're always doing much better than you think or feel. It's hard for you to see it because the best view is from outside looking in. They are excellent candidates for the workplace. They bring wisdom and experience and can be mentors to younger employees. They can extrapolate and fill in gaps in knowledge because they have years of experience to draw upon. And they don't need hand holding; they are resourceful. They are motivated to contribute and be relevant in today's world. Other nations value and respect their seniors but in the U.S. we discard our seniors. This thinking has to change as we have a tsunami of baby boomers who are mentally and physically fit and eager to keep on working. Let's employ them and pair them with younger workers who can learn from them. Have you ever heard of him? 👉Initial failure is not fatal - as long as you stay in the race. Michael Phelps didn't win even a single bronze in his first Olympics in 2000. But he stayed on track and won 6 gold medals at the next Olympics in 2004. 👉Rest is a fundamental part of the race. Slow down every once in a while. Even if the starting line isn't the same..... ......The finish line is equal 🥇🥈🥉 👆 I said that It's funny isn't it, how we stagger a race to accommodate the bend, only to flatten out on the straight, to ensure its a fair approach to the finish line 🏃♂️ 🏃♂️ 🏃♂️ but we still create difference in lane placement It's all in the draw of the lane isn't it? 🤔 Everyone knows the middle lanes are the fastest right? Runners, swimmers....no one wants lanes 1 & 8 It's the fast lanes we want, right in the middle 3,4 & 5 but you know we have had medal winners in lanes 1 & 8, records won even....the mighty Bolt ⚡️won once in lane 1 Olympic runner Wayde van Niekerk unexpectedly won gold in the 400 meters from Lane 8, who? 🏃♂️ However, that's the exception rather than the rule. Fast runners run faster with less of a bend to contend with and swimmers less of a wake 🌊 There that's the science bit. Tall people don't run bends well...fact Tall swimmers have better reach from standing start positions... 🏊♀️... fact So as we often place sporting prowess as an analogy in the world of business achievement, we do, you know we do, let's not forget those that run at a different pace, the starters from lanes 1 & 8. Hampered by a bend, the extended curve, the trail of the wake 🌊 too tall .... The distance is still the same, starts may stagger, lanes may vary but the end goal, the finish line, is still the same...make it so 🖖 Its not always the fastest with record breaking finishes that deliver but slower pace will bring quality output that sets the standard for your next sprint ... Watching the Olympics last night was the biggest lesson in why you should NOT be focussed on your competition... Jakob Ingebrigtsen (Norway) and Josh Kerr (UK) were pitted against each other in the whole run up to the men's 1500m at this year's olympics. There were multiple videos of the two of them acting like it was a race just between them, with each claiming they were going to win. Even the commentators said it would be Ingebrigtsen or Kerr across the finish line first. But when the race actually happened they were so consumed by each other that another runner Cole Hocker (USA), just ran straight past them. The runners, commentators and whole audience was shocked. No one saw it coming. Why did I love this so much? Because it's a prime example of how being distracted by your competition makes you lose focus of what you're truly trying to achieve. If both runners had been running THIER best race, they may have been more focussed on winning. They may have even been more open to all possibilities, and seen the other runner gaining on them. But they didn't. There's a lesson to be learned here. Focus on your own race. At the weekend I had the privilege of coxing Brixham Ladies gig rowers in the Appledore “Supervets” Championship. We placed second in our qualifying heats, fought hard in the semi-finals to finish seventh place in the final. I couldn’t have asked for more from the crew who fought every inch of the way against really tough competition. Driving home I realised that coxing a rowing crew is entirely analogous to leading a team. The crew look to you for firm direction and leadership. This must be achieved with absolute consensus to ensure that everyone is onboard with your strategy and plan. And you must have a plan! This begins before the event, ensuring your rowers are fit, ready and you have contingency were one of them to become unavailable. The planning continues at the event, scouting the course, considering tides/winds, working out how to row the race from your given berth etc… This needs to be communicated to the team, they need to know what you expect of them. Then there’s the race. As the cox it’s your job to get the team to the line at the right place at the right time. You need them warmed up and ready to fight tooth and nail. You need to understand the competition and be aware of what is likely to affect your carefully laid out plan. From the start you are in control. Directing six rowers, feeding them information, making quick decisions, reacting to things that go wrong and constantly revising your race strategy as it unfolds around you. Some of your competitors may play nasty, you have to hold your nerve, stay calm and focus on your crew and your plan. The sea can change, a buoy turn that seemed easy now requires a different approach as waves drive you away from it. Boats in front of you require you to take a different course if you’re going to get past. All the while you must keep the rowers motivated. They will be giving everything but it may not be enough to get you the lead. But we never give up and you must drive them all the way to the finish, achieving the best you can as a team. But your job doesn’t end at the line. You need to review yours and the team’s performance. What went well? What didn’t? How can we improve in the next heat? How does this affect the strategy we’d previously been working to. As a cox you need to listen, digest and act in the best interests of the team. The loudest voice is not always correct. In reading this I hope you agree the analogies are clear to team leadership. I must have got some of it right at the weekend but my coxing was by no means perfect. It’s making me think hard about my team leadership and ensuring that I’m running our business in a similar way. But let me leave on a recommendation, if you’re struggling to filter those CVs for a leadership post, just look for the phrase “cox” in the interests section. #rowing #leadership #brixham
