Another successful NAIDOC week has come to end, this year’s theme centred around the resilience of First Nations people, emphasising on our enduring connection to the land, culture, and community. These words "Keep the Fire Burning, Blak, Loud & Proud” highlight the importance of cultural pride, resilience, and community solidarity. The importance of ongoing support and commitment to First Nations people, rather than just acknowledging them for a specific period like one week out of the year, encouraging consistent support and initiatives with First Nations consultation that ignite positive change are crucial. It's about maintaining authentic efforts and not just temporary gestures.

I learned about the Institute of Cultural Affairs' ORID model this week. It's a structured facilitation process that's great for reflecting, analyzing and making decisions. It seemed timely, having just written a few posts about students reflecting on their work. Here are its 4 stages:

The Kleinfelder team took time to acknowledge NAIDOC week and the importance of celebrating the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The team participated in events to learn more about First Nations culture, investigated and presented ways to promote and foster increased Indigenous participation in our industry, and incorporated conscious supply changes to our business. All with the aim of learning how to be the best ally we can be.   This NAIDOC week we at Kleinfelder continue to make conscious focused changes and challenge ourselves to learn and do more; for we believe even today’s smaller deliberate changes can become the instinctive strides forward of tomorrow. #NAIDOC2024

This year’s NAIDOC Week will again celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, with the theme of “Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud”. ANZSOG acknowledges the importance of NAIDOC Week as a celebration which honours First Nations peoples and reminds us of the importance of our own journey to become a culturally competent organisation, making a positive contribution to First Nations policy and public administration. Held across Australia from 7-14 July 2024, this year’s NAIDOC Week recognises the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture – with fire as a symbol of connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In NAIDOC week, and throughout the year, ANZSOG stands with the First Nations of Australia and supports aspirations for a just and equitable relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, and for First Nations communities to have control over their own lives. Despite the progress we have made, there are still many structural and cultural changes that need to happen within public services to make this a reality, and we are proud that ANZSOG is working to help make those changes happen.

🌟 Celebrating Asian Heritage Month in Canada 🌟 This May, I am thrilled to celebrate Asian Heritage Month—a time to honour the profound impact that individuals of Asian descent have had on Canada's history, culture, and future. As a recent graduate from Dalhousie University, the significance of this month resonates deeply with me, as it highlights the stories, contributions, and achievements of Asian communities across the country. From the early days in the 1780s, when the first Chinese workers arrived to help build the trading posts on Vancouver Island, to the modern contributions in various sectors like technology, healthcare, arts, and public service, Asian Canadians have played an integral part in shaping modern Canada. This month, I encourage all my connections to delve into the rich tapestry of narratives that Asian Canadians have woven into the national fabric. Let's take this opportunity to educate ourselves about the diverse cultures, languages, and traditions that make up Canada's Asian communities. Let's also reflect on the challenges these communities have faced, including historical injustices and ongoing issues like anti-Asian racism, and commit to building a more inclusive society. 🔹 Learn about and attend various cultural events. 🔹 Engage in conversations that amplify Asian voices and stories. 🔹 Reflect on and share your own experiences or learn about the diverse cultures, languages, and traditions of Canada's Asian communities. 🔹 Think about how we can contribute to dismantling racial barriers and building equity. Together, we can celebrate the diversity that makes Canada stronger and more vibrant. WORLD DAY FOR CULTURAL DIVERSITY, 21 MAY Held every year on 21 May, the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development celebrates not only the richness of the world’s cultures but also the essential role of intercultural dialogue in achieving peace and sustainable development (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation, n.d.). However, we still have work to do. Cultural diversity "operates as euphemism for comparison" (Gustafson, 2020, p. 5) between cultural groups. Group identification often fails to acknowledge the individuals that make groups, hence marginalising or suppressing many voices. In teacher education, cultural diversity is most frequently organised in a format where "experts pass on knowledge about their culture" (Angelovska, 2023, p. 34) in a "tourist-based or transmission approach” (Convertino et al., 2016, p. 25). Within the realm of cultural diversity, we need to start seeing cultural individuality as its vital part and engage in conversations where we will explore different perspectives and world views, and build a world for everyone. CULTURAL DIVERSITY HAS TO BECOME THE NORM!
