📕 📝 Rip Van History: First Bake Sale 📕 📝 Here is a picture of the very first time we sold Rip Van Wafels. After many taste tests and recipe iterations we were ready to go from “giving away samples” to “selling stroopwafels”. Selling our product was an important next step in validating whether we actually resonated with consumers or not. There were two sets of data points we were looking for: 1) would people actually buy our wafels? 2) was there anything we could learn from their purchase behavior and did they have any valuable feedback that we could take into account to improve our offering? We setup a little stand on the Main Green at Brown University at 9 am on a Saturday morning, ready to go with 200 pre-baked Rip Van Wafels and a little sign stating “1 wafel for $1”. We had no idea what would happen, whether it would resonate with the students walking by or not… but going for it was the only way to find out. Most students never had seen a stroopwafel before and so as they walked by they were curious. The most asked question was “what type of cookies are these?”. Once a few students decided to give our stroopwafels a try, the unique crispy & chewy texture and dutch caramel flavor really resonated. There was a snow ball effect; few customers lead to on the spot word of mouth, which attracted more students to buy and try Rip Van Wafels. Within 2hrs we sold out. We knew the result was a good signal and validated that there were consumers out there (atleast hungry college students) that would buy our product. It was because of the bake sale that we then decided to apply for a food license, register a company and start selling Rip Van Wafels packaged in cafe’s as a next step. A decade later we are selling 100 million+ units a year and are distributed nationally omni-channel. Although we are at a different scale the fundamental approach we took in starting the business and how we operate today is the same. We try and continuously learn from our customers, incorporate their feedback and improve step by step. Cheers to the many steps it took along the way.
