The Mountain West is one of the largest and more diverse areas of the United States. Its rich landscape is both picturesque and iconic, bringing a culture that is founded on hard work and overcoming adversity. The area, also known as the Mountain States, is one of the fastest growing areas in the U.S. This growth, coupled with its unique landscape, provides the backdrop for some of the most innovative and interesting companies to flourish. PCI Mountain States represents manufacturers of precast and prestressed concrete in Colorado, Utah, Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. It is an association with a unique history and an exciting future. Speaking about the main objective of the organization, Jim Schneider, LEED AP, Executive Director at PCI Mountain State said: “Basically our main objective is to grow the market share for precast in this part of the country.” For Schneider, the association’s work largely centers around developing and fostering relationships. “A lot of what we do is outreach to the design community, talking to architects, engineers, owners and contractors to educate them about the different potentials for the material and show them where it may fit. We help connect the design and construction community with our precasters and try to help facilitate those kinds of relationships that bring about projects for our members.” The association’s history is an interesting one. Founded in the 1980s, it was previously known as the Colorado Prestressers Association. Schneider explained that one man, Wally Priebus, established the association and laid the groundwork for a lot of precast work in the region. When he retired, the association went on a temporary hiatus. However, a few years later, members in the surrounding states speaking about reforming the organization in 2015. PUSHING THE ENVELOPE I would like to pile on the congratulations to the project team, but with a Building Science twist: Not only did they receive the 2024 MCA Choice Award, they also achieved a Whole Building Air Tightness test result of 0.015CFM50/SF!!! For a point of reference, the Phuis airtightness requirement is 0.060 CFM50/SF. - 285,000 square feet building footprint - 423,000 square feet exterior enclosure surface area If you want the equivalent value at 75pascals, the power law conversion would be 0.019CFM75/SF. If you’re stuck in your ways and want to turn this into a less sensible metric, the average building height of 34 feet would give you 0.04ACH50 Multipoint table and chart in the comments below. Scientists and engineers from Swansea University, the University of Exeter and the University of Bath are looking to cut emissions from the built environment by exploring a different approach to constructing tall buildings. The LOCAST (Low-Carbon Structures) project has received £1.2m in funding from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). The team said that while tall buildings use urban space efficiently, constructing them has a high carbon cost compared to the same floor space spread across several shorter buildings. “We’re at a point where heating and lighting are so efficient that most of the lifetime climate emissions from any new building come from making the concrete, steel and glass that go into it,” Professor Ian Walker, an environmental psychologist from Swansea University, who co-authored the funding bid, said in a statement. “Using less of these materials in tall buildings would put a big dent in the emissions from the built environment. The ongoing US 101 / University Avenue Interchange Improvements project in East Palo Alto is a comprehensive endeavor by MCM Construction and the City of East Palo Alto. It involves constructing a pedestrian overcrossing above US 101, connecting it with a Class I bikeway that extends to Woodland Avenue in the west and Donohoe Street in the east. Additionally, the project includes widening the US 101 southbound off-ramp to University Avenue, reconstructing the northbound off-ramp, and renovating a section of University Avenue between US 101 and Woodland Avenue.
