The Stress in America report provides very interesting insight into the ways that Americans perceive and react to stress. It is interesting that despite the fact that we are all very connected through our phones and social media, 2/3 of adults said they could’ve used more emotional support.

Opening paragraph: Recent work argues for longtermism––the position that often our morally best options will be those with the best long-term consequences. Proponents of longtermism sometimes suggest that in most decisions expected long-term benefits outweigh all short-term effects. In ‘The scope of longtermism’, David Thorstad argues that most of our decisions do not have this character. He identifies three features of our decisions that suggest long-term effects are only relevant in special cases: rapid diminution––our actions may not have persistent effects, washing out––we might not be able to predict persistent effects, and option unawareness––we may struggle to recognise those options that are best in the long term even when we have them. 

You may be compassionate towards others, but are you compassionate towards yourself?' To what extent are men self-compassionate? How does being resilient and facing stress relate to whether men are more or less self-compassionate? For my final research project with The Open University, I aim to answer the above questions by investigating mens levels of self-compassion and how they relate to stress and resilience. My study focuses solely on mens levels of self-compassion as this is a comparatively under-researched area. Do you and your people have the right support available?

#Stress is not a disease or a problem. #Psychological stress is an effect of 'friction' between our #behavior and #perception. Contemporary solutions are often focused on reducing #stressors in their effect or presence, but all effects will always be just short-term #success. Why? Because stress is not a problem, we need to solve it. Stress is a survival and activation mechanism. What we really need is to learn how to manage it, or better, how to manage our behavior that results in elevated stress levels that last. What can you do instantly about it? Start reframing your beliefs about #locusofcontrol; meaning stop attributing accountability to others for your own #feelings. What you feel and how you feel is all you and tells a lot about your #strength and #power.

Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) populations faced the highest COVID-19 case and death rates compared to any other racial or ethnic group in California, but data on the mental health and socioeconomic impacts of this disproportionate burden are lacking or hidden under aggregated “Asian/Pacific Islander” categories. In a project that spans two CPR3 priority research areas entitled California Pacific Islander Well-being And COVID-19 Economic Survey (CAPIWAVES), Dr. Brittany Morey from UC Irvine and her team are working with NHPI community-based organizations to address this data gap by conducting surveys among NHPI communities that explore the mental health and socioeconomic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2011, 27% of Stress in America survey respondents reported that lack of willpower was the most significant barrier to change. Although many people blame faulty willpower for their imperfect choices, it’s clear they haven’t given up hope. A majority of respondents believe that willpower is something that can be learned. Those respondents are on to something. Studies show that strong social support systems are a protective buffer to stress. In small doses, stress can be motivational. However, chronic stress or traumatic stressors can have long-term physical implications after the stressful event has ended. Click on the link for more information.
