We heard that Los Alamos became a Bee City, so we were wondering, what does that exactly means? 🐝 The title "Bee City" in the United States implies that the city has taken specific measures to protect and promote the health of bees and other pollinators. This title is granted by Bee City USA: a non-profit organization that works to encourage pollinator conservation in communities across the country. Being designated as a Bee City implies that the city has made concrete commitments, such as creating pollinator habitats, reducing the use of toxic pesticides, public education on the importance of pollinators, and adopting policies that favor their protection. In summary, a Bee City is committed to promoting and protecting the health of bees and other pollinators through concrete actions and public awareness of their importance to ecosystems and agriculture. Reflections on Hayes Valley Farm (2010-2013), a radical permaculture experiment and activation of the urban commons, built with urban discards on the ruins of the 101 Central Freeway in the heart of San Francisco. #earthcare #peoplecare #fairshare ☀ WE MET OUTOORS. 💛 From the ruins of the former freeway, we spun black gold from trash in what became Hayes Valley Farm. Urban discards ['trash'] ...coffee grounds from neighbors truckloads of wood chips from local arborists + discarded boxes from Google and the tech companies that eventually led to many volunteers who collectively created it being priced out of San Francisco. Join us Tuesday 14th May from 6-7pm for the next free Growing Diversity project's webinar 'Growing Volunteers - tips and good practice for Community Tree Nurseries'. Guest speakers are both from More Trees for Bath and North East Somerset - Richard Higgs, Director and Emma Jones, Volunteer and Engagement Officer. They both have extensive experience of working with volunteers and Emma has been a volunteer for More Trees BANES previously too. They will share on their experiences of: Volunteer recruitment, engagement, training/learning, what works well and helps in terms of supporting and enabling people to learn and grow. Challenges and overcoming them will also be covered. Together with an overview of how a strategy for Volunteering can be helpful in guiding the work they do with volunteers and in terms of reaching a wider demographic. They have much to share and as they have said they are always learning! Although the Growing Diversity project is focused on supporting CTNs to grow 'hard to source and grow species', we felt it is really important to include a webinar on volunteers. As without volunteers, the seed collections, processing and growing on may not happen! Volunteers are vital to the key tasks of running a CTN. Often a CTN will only have volunteers too, with no paid staff, so there needs to be more value and understanding on how to access support and find new volunteers to grow the CTN. There will be ample time to have a discussion and ask questions at the end.
