Jon Ford, Senior Regional Field Manager for Community Development with the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco leads a conversation about the connections between transit, housing and health, with Debarati "Mimi" Majumdar Narayan PhD, Health Programs Officer at The Pew Charitable Trusts and John Vu, Vice President of Strategy for Community Health at Kaiser Permanente. The speakers highlight examples of collaboration across these sectors, with examples from Phoenix, Charlotte and the Purple Line Coalition in Maryland. And they spotlight tools, such as Health Impact Assessments and Community Health Needs Assessments, that can be a basis for aligning policy, projects and resources to achieve healthier communities. Did you know: - Every nonprofit hospital system must do an assessment every three years of the community health needs in the footprint around its hospital. Kaiser Permanente has 47 of these reports.  - There are 445 Health Impact Assessments, of which more than 200 are on transportation decisions.  - A joint study by public health and transportation officials in Charlotte, NC, found that after light rail opened the average rider lost 6.45 pounds. Inventors & Designers spend their lives identifying ‘Needs & Trends’ …. In the for-profit sector it’s called ‘market-making’. Whereas , in the non-profit industry there is a chance to leverage insights AHEAD of the ‘problems’ that they usually are called upon to ‘clean up’ . A million dollars properly leveraged can have a greater impact in the non-profit sector than the in the for-profit one . For-Profit efforts focus narrowly on return-on-investments ; Non-Profits can excel at demonstrable return-on-ideas where the former would fail ….. to scale creative solutions to identifiable trends.

Great overview of Planned Giving by the Health Care Foundation. Regarding resources, don't discount what you might have to give. For example, an old life insurance policy can do wonders. "Trapped" money in a company or professional corporation can be extracted to do something great. Even unneeded CPP payments can be redirected to make a significant gift. #USA 🇺🇸: Delighted to join my fellow Evaluation Panel Reviewers for the Yield Giving Open Call & members of the Lever for Change network in sharing and amplifying the following exciting news: Today, MacKenzie Scott’s Yield Giving announced that 361 organizations are receiving $640 million for their work with people and in places experiencing the greatest need in the United States. This cohort of 361 outstanding teams from 38 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico will enable individuals and families to achieve substantive improvement in their well-being through foundational resources. These community-led, community-focused organizations work in urban and rural settings, with individuals of all ages, focusing on a wide range of issues. Yet, they share a common sense of purpose: the Open Call awardees are all making positive change in their communities by reducing disparities in economic outcomes, education, health, and other critical issues. The Open Call received 6,353 applications and initially planned for 250 awards of $1 million each. In the Fall of 2023, organizations top-rated by their peers advanced to a second round of review by an external Evaluation Panel recruited for experience relevant to this cause, and underwent a final round of due diligence. In light of the incredible work of these organizations, as judged by their peers and external panelists, the donor team decided to expand the awardee pool and the award amount. The 279 organizations in the top tier of scores will receive $2 million each, and the 82 organizations in the next tier will receive $1 million each. Congratulations to all of the awardees! Black Men’s Health Clinic® (BMHC) would like to thank The New Philanthropists (TNP) for their incredible support in reconnecting us to one of our board members, Michael Weaver. The significance of this collaborative board identification and matching process is that people of color are often not given the opportunity, or have more challenges, to become board members of nonprofit organizations, particularly on the boards they are passionate about. TNP is changing this dilemma. TNP matched Michael to BMHC in 2023, and we are pleased that he has been matched to serve on the board for another year. Michael shares a similar sentiment as we do.
