Conflicting trends for nuclear power in the United States emerged in 2023. Among the positives was the completion in July, after years of delay, of Vogtle 3, the first built-from-scratch nuclear unit constructed in the United States in decades. In December, at the COP 28 climate conference in Dubai, the United States was one of 22 signatories to a declaration that recognized the “key role” of nuclear energy in achieving net zero climate emissions. The declaration established an “aspirational” goal of tripling world nuclear capacity by 2050. Nuclear power now has a prominent seat at the climate roundtable. The investment in nuclear plants 40 years ago, were made to ensure that long lived assets could power economies of the future. The original licenses contemplated a 40 year life due to the the relatively new nature of commercial nuclear power. As operating experience, technological advancement and innovation has occurred, these same facilities are now being licensed for 80 years of operation. This form of affordable, clean energy, similar to hydro, is a base load source that can provide stable, reliable and secure power over many years. When combined with intermittent sources, a diverse portfolio of generation can be achieved while enabling a long term planning period to stabilize both grid operations and rates.
