Common mental health issues, such as reports of high #stress, #anxiety and #depression, in offshore workers have increased in recorded instances recently. The International Association of Drilling Contractors highlighted that 60% of employees faced mental health challenges at some point in their lives. Balancing mental health while grappling with personal issues, (whether it's a breakup, issues with your spouse, children, parents etc) becomes even tougher when working in the offshore industry. The isolation and intense work conditions can make feelings of loneliness and heartache seem even more overwhelming. It's easy to feel disconnected from support systems back home, and the constant pressure can make emotional struggles feel insurmountable. Finding ways to reach out for help, whether through onboard support networks or self-care strategies, is vital. Acknowledging and addressing these feelings is crucial to maintaining both emotional and professional balance amidst the challenges of offshore life. We do business across many sectors from defence & aerospace to all kinds of heavy manufacturing and precision #engineering. But, we will never forget our roots in the UKCS #energyindustry, and are very proud of the clients and continuing contribution we make in that vital sector. That is why Integrity HSE will use today to remember those lost and effected by events 36 years ago on Piper Alpha. On #socialmedia channels across the globe, pages will be filled with reminders of the #failures that caused that horrible event. We welcome every one of those conversations, because the #vulnerability they discuss is deadly, and what we help our clients manage. This anniversary, we want to highlight the cost of #disasters in terms of the human #psychology post-event. Approximately 10 years after Piper Alpha, a group of academics contacted 46 out of the 59 #survivors, and 33 of them agreed to participate in a study. The study's aim was to understand what it means to survive a major #disaster, and the suffering that is felt there after. The study (1998) found sobering results, with 21% still showing diagnosable criteria of post-traumatic #stress disorder (PTSD). Psychological issues were reported by 97%, with 76% still in individual #therapy a decade later; 55% taking prescribed medication; 21% attending group #psychotherapy and 55% using a combination of treatments. The majority (61%) stated the worst long-term effect was the impact their well-being had on #relationships. Today, and every day after, we all have a #duty to remember those lost on the 6th July 1988, and to ensure those failings are never repeated. However, we must not forget our duty to those also impacted (directly or indirectly) by events, because we know #pain spreads further and lasts longer than we previously recognised. Sharing my thoughts: After working for many years, mainly with diving teams, in the offshore industry I am noticing a trend in the diagnosis of medical conditions. Specifically heart problems requiring stents and cardiac bypass, hypertension and diabetes. These chronic illness rearing their ugly heads in young lives after years of silent devastation reeking havoc on the body systems finally presenting as symptoms. The more tragic the suicide rate. I recently presented at the IMCA regional meeting in Cape Town South Africa, March 2024. The speaker before me spoke on "unmanned vehicles in industry". He was asked - What is the worst thing that can go wrong with an unmanned vehicle - The answer " Loss of communications, the next question being, what is the second worst thing that can happen? The answer - "The loss of battery power". Well I never!!! - how truthfully do these words resonate with our fellow human being. Please know, if you have lost communications, if you have lost battery power and all hope there is a solution. I am certainly here to listen. Jobsite safety is everyone's responsibility. This includes mental health, anxiety, stress, and depression. Unfortunately, the construction industry has one of the highest suicide rates by occupation in the U.S. Everyone can work together to slash the stigma of mental health. Small changes like asking for help, being available to listen, allowing small breaks, or healthier diets can be just as important as safety gear. Minimal efforts can make a big difference when it comes to jobsite safety for everyone.
