🎉 Let's celebrate progress amidst climate challenges. Last week, King's College London was ranked in the top 2% of global universities in the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings. What does this mean? The THE Impact Rankings are the only global performance tables that assess 2,000+ universities around the world against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 🌏 The SDGs are a set of 17 goals approved by the UN which aim to transform the world by 2030. Sustainable Development Program for Schools We're excited to announce the launch of our Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Cell, a dedicated initiative aimed at making our school a hub of sustainability, innovation, and community impact! Why an SDG Cell? In a rapidly changing world, it's crucial that our students not only learn about global challenges but also become active contributors to solving them. The SDG Cell will focus on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations, covering areas like quality education, climate action, gender equality, and more. What Will the SDG Cell Do? Workshops & Training: Equip students and teachers with the knowledge and skills to understand and act on the SDGs. I will be giving a keynote talk this Monday on the pivotal role of education and training for the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030, alongside UNITAR and UNDESA, at the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF). 🌍 When it comes to development and building a better intergenerational future, one that is inclusive, fair, and focuses on wellbeing, education is our superpower! For every additional year of schooling, an individual’s earnings increase by an average of 10%. Quality education has the power to lift people out of poverty and create more equitable societies. Studies show that students who receive environmental education are 20% more likely to engage in sustainable behaviors, influencing their communities positively. Educating girls is one of the most powerful tools for achieving gender equality. For instance, every extra year of education for girls increases their future earnings by 10-20%. The list goes on However, we are not there (yet). Technology, and the coming AI wave, can help us make education more accessible to all. But this needs government and the private sector to work together, in ways they never did before. I call this, DPPP (The Digital Public Private Partnerships). 🌍 Eliminating Gender Disparities in Education 🌍 During the first trimester of my MSc, I had the incredible opportunity to delve into Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4.5, focusing on eliminating gender disparities in education. Under the guidance of our lecturer Frances MacInnes, I embarked on a journey of discovery and storytelling that truly enlightened me. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), established by the United Nations, aim to address global challenges and achieve a better and more sustainable future for all by 2030. They cover a broad range of issues including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice. Before this course, I had little knowledge of the SDGs. However, the MSkills course, led by Frances, highlighted their importance and the power of storytelling in conveying their significance. We were challenged to create a digital story for our chosen SDG, which became a transformative experience for me. For my assignment, I focused on an aspect of SDG 4.5 which aims to eliminate gender disparity and ensure equal access to all levels of education. This goal is pivotal in achieving gender equality and empowering women and girls. The project not only deepened my understanding of global educational disparities but also enhanced my research and storytelling skills. University of Galway has been named the number one university in Ireland for sustainable development for the third year in a row. The accolade has been awarded by Times Higher Education Impact rankings which also places the University in the Top 5 in the EU🏅♻️🌍 The rankings place University of Galway in the world’s top 50 and globally recognises the University's significant contribution to progress on 11 of the 17 UN SDGs. This includes a world ranking of number 10 for Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12) and top 100 status for 6 of the 17 SDGs. Assessments for THE Impact rankings are based on submissions from universities around the world in line with the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The report is a measure of the extent to which institutions are having a positive social and economic impact on the planet; from climate action and gender equality, to good health and well-being.

🌍 Sustainable development is a crucial topic in our current world, and I had the opportunity to attend a complet course on this subject with Isaline Ronvaux during my #internationalweek in #Vietnam. 📖 During my trip, I was able to attend four sessions dedicated to #sustainabledevelopment. In these classes, I discovered the United Nations' project, which is the establishment of 17 sustainable development goals (SDG). These 17 goals encompass 17 principles that we must improve to hope to enhance the sustainability factor of our planet in the years to come. Among these 17 factors, we can find: zero hunger, gender equality, and quality education. By discovering these different factors, I realized that far too many people still do not have access to the same privileges as others, and that must change urgently. 👩🎓 To return to these 17 goals, the teacher explained to us that all countries belonging to the United Nations have until 2030 to try to improve at least 3 to 4 of these 17 goals. I found these classes very interesting and enriching, both in terms of my awareness of the world in which I am growing and developing, but also in increasing my knowledge of sustainable development. I had never heard of these 17 goals, and it made me realize that I too, on my scale, can take actions to try to address some of these goals. Finally, I think everyone should take a moment to discover these 17 goals and consider what they could do to contribute to their achievement."
