This week at George St: a handcrafted window to celebrate a handcrafted boot. Thanks @steady_hand_studio for bringing a taste of our Adelaide workshop to the streets of Sydney’s CBD.

2moExciting. In the late 1970s, I went to Percy Street Prospect to meet the then-owner of RM Williams, the late John Swain; in those days, they handcrafted around 50 boots per day. I wanted to showcase one of my past major urban projects, the “Gallerie Shopping Centre” at 20 Gawler Place Adelaide, as I saw a significant market for RM Williams handmade boots. Unfortunately, Mr Swain disagreed, advising me that his customers were Country people and that the "City Guys" would not buy RM Williams handmade boots. I offered to set up a store at the front entrance to the Gallerie at our cost, effectively underwriting this launch into RM Williams's 1st CBD store worldwide. Today, RM William's handmade boots are produced at a rate of around 1,500+ boots per day. It has global markets, and it has become an iconic Australian brand. One of my previous major urban projects, “The Gallerie Shopping Centre” in 20 Gawler Place Adelaide, was the largest repurposing of historical G&R Wills Shipping Company offices/warehouses in the City of Adelaide's history. Apart from RM Williams, one cannot imagine a major shopping mall in Australia today without a Food Hall; the “Gallerie Shopping Centre” was the 1st with the Gallierie Food Affair.
