Tuesday, January 16, 2024 - 12:00pm to 1:00pm EST REGISTER HERE! The use of ceramic tile & natural stone on exterior decks has become increasingly popular for both residential and commercial projects. Despite the proliferation of waterproofing and tile installation products and systems, this type of installation is still subject to installation challenges which can result in failure and expensive remediation. This presentation examines legacy installation shortcomings, current industry best practices, and innovative product development which address some of the concerns that heretofore have contributed to exterior deck failures. At the end of the presentation, you will be armed with the knowledge needed to move forward and identify the means and methods needed to ensure your exterior deck project is successful. Learning Objectives: Examine the history of exterior deck installation techniques & challenges Review the nature of exterior deck failures and the role legacy means & methods play in evolution of best practices Highlight misinformation, misperceptions, and ineffective installation practices which are fueling the increase in shortened life cycles of exterior deck installations The presentation culminates with supportive documentation and collaborative information from independent forensic and waterproofing consultants, strengthening the assertions and issues raised, and maps out a critical path of proactive specification language and installation techniques designed to minimize the incident of exterior deck failures, as well as promoting evolving best practices. By elevating materials, methods, and best practices, the risk of remediation associated with poorly installed exterior decks can be greatly reduced Sponsored By: Noble Company Presented By: Dean Moilanen

Curious about why SIPs are gaining traction as a must-consider building option for new constructions? While SIPs may be relatively new to New Zealand, they have a long history of successful use overseas. Offering numerous advantages over conventional stud framing, SIPs are worth exploring further. Ian Abley's Presentation to Norfolk and Suffolk IFE Branch on 8 February Really looking forward to hearing an undoubted expert give an unbiased assessment of where we are with the 'Class O Conundrum'. 8th February 2024 3.30pm This is a double session starting at the slightly earlier time of 3.30pm, and ending 5.30 pm. This seminar has been approved for 2 hours IFE CPD Points ** the talk will start promptly at 3.30pm. Please join a minute or two early if you can** Summary: Class 0 was said to be the highest national performance classification for construction materials and products, such as in external walls, until the fatal fire of Grenfell Tower on 14 June 2017. Despite a warning about the potential combustibility of Class 0 “cladding” products from the Select Committee to the Ministry publishing statutory guidance after Garnock Court fire on 11 June 1999. Class 0 was defined in the statutory guidance of Approved Document Part B and not in any British Standard. When Grenfell Tower Inquiry finally reports by June 2024 it will be seven years since 72 deaths. That was an unnecessary and high price for British society to discover that Class 0 could in fact be achieved by composite products with highly combustible cores. This webinar explains the Class 0 Conundrum using the evidence in a continuing process of disclosure, which led to Inquiry publication in 2022 of the Research on the Approved Document And Revision (RADAR) project, undertaken with construction industry partners in 2000.

I just watched the Panel statement on the publication of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 2 report. It's essential watching for anyone in the construction industry - and in particular the statement by Thouria Istephan, which starts at 28:23. Some particularly important extracts from her very moving statement: "Since the fire, the government has passed the Building Safety Act. The Act is welcome, but we need to go further." "Our recommendations place new burdens and responsibilities on people and organisations. I make no apologies for that. Put simply, if you work in the construction industry, and you do not feel the weight of responsibility you have for keeping people safe, you are in the wrong job." "The change we need to bring about is partly about structures and regulations ..... but the necessary change is also one of culture and behaviours. Change on this scale needs to be owned and led by those of us working in the sector. It is not enough to pass an Act of Parliament and to sit back and to think the work is done. Without change in behaviour, and a recognition that the needs of the people who use our buildings must be placed at the centre of our work, the lessons of Grenfell will not truly be learnt in full." ".... the losses so many people have suffered, and my involvement in this process, has left a mark on me, as a person, and as a professional, which will last far beyond this enquiry." We should all absorb these words, and the Panel's recommendations, and make sure that they make a mark on us, and we do learn those lessons. https://lnkd.in/eFnusM9m
