Governments, sustainable impact investors, development agencies, private investors… all need to take a closer look at the financing gap in the resources sector needed to achieve net zero. The linked article suggests a recent WoodMac review puts the gap at potentially $78 trillion over the next 26 years .. ~$3 trillion a year. While that seems a high estimate.. it nevertheless seems to me the continued ostracising of the mining and natural resources sector creates unfortunate cost hurdles which may lead to real harm through delays in transitioning to clean energy systems. It is truly an honour to have been recently appointed as a member of the Technical Advisory Committee for the Global Investor Commission on Mining 2030. This collaborative investor-led initiative seeks to define a vision for a socially and environmentally responsible mining sector by 2030 and to develop a consensus about the role of finance in realizing this vision.
