Enabling better nature-related risk management, corporate reporting and capital allocation.

About us

The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) has developed a set of disclosure recommendations and guidance that encourage and enable business and finance to assess, report and act on their nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities. The recommendations and guidance will enable businesses and finance to integrate nature into decision making. Our aim is to support a shift in global financial flows away from nature-negative outcomes and toward nature-positive outcomes, aligned with the Global Biodiversity Framework. Launched in 2021, TNFD released the first beta versions its framework for consultation and feedback between March 2022 and March 2024. Over the two-year design and development phase leading to the publication of the TNFD recommendations in September 2023, it received feedback from over 60 countries. Over 200 pilot tests of a prototype framework were conducted by business and financial institutions around the world across sectors, geographies and biomes. TNFD published its final recommendation in September 2023.

  • How can the TNFD support your nature reporting requirements? The global architecture for action on nature-related corporate reporting is now firmly in focus and coming together quickly. Since the release of the TNFD recommended disclosures in September 2023, the TNFD has been working in collaboration with several global standards bodies and disclosure platforms (UN Biodiversity, GRI, EFRAG, CDP, IFRS Foundation) to encourage early harmonisation of the emerging nature-related reporting landscape and make it as practical as possible for companies to identify and assess their nature-related issues. Swipe to find out more ➡️➡️➡️ Through these ongoing efforts, our goal is to minimise divergence in requirements, use the same metrics to the greatest extent possible and avoid where possible duplication of reporting outputs. What’s clear from our mapping work with these partners is that companies that are already using or preparing to report in line with these global or jurisdictional reporting standards are well placed to be aligned with the TNFD recommendations. 📢 At the UN Biodiversity #COP16 in Colombia, we will announce the next cohort of TNFD Adopters 🔗Register here - https://ow.ly/YApx50T3f9B 🗓️Deadline - 11 October #Nature #biodiversity #CSRD #NatureReporting #COP16 #UNBiodiversity #GRI #CDP #IFRSFoundation #ISSB

Two weeks ago, we launched with Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) a joint interoperability mapping document 📕 It’s a useful resource for #sustainabilityreporters focussing on #biodiversity 🐝 and #nature 🌼 providing a comprehensive overview of the alignment between the #GRIStandards and #TNFD Disclosure Recommendations and metrics. Key milestones of the mapping include: ✅Consistency on nature-related concepts and definitions. ✅All disclosures in #GRI101: Biodiversity 2024 are now included in the TNFD Recommendations, and GRI Standards feature the Recommendations (except for those specifically on nature-related risk and opportunity assessments). ✅Strong alignment between the TNFD core global disclosure metrics and related GRI Standards. Initial mapping also shows consistency between TNFD sector metrics and corresponding GRI Sector Standards. • On International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, we are recognising the critical role and contributions made by Indigenous Peoples and local communities to the ecosystems and the services they provide us all. Although Indigenous Peoples represent only 5% of the global population, they protect 80% of Earth’s remaining biodiversity. According to the United Nations, Indigenous Peoples' territories encompass 28% of the globe's surface and contain 11% of the world’s forests. The forests on their land are better maintained and have higher preserved biodiversity than those on non-Indigenous lands. But just this week, the World Benchmarking Alliance published findings that most companies neglect Indigenous Peoples' rights, with fewer than 13% of those evaluated in their Nature Benchmark (https://ow.ly/iKKP50STIHY) demonstrating a clear commitment to respecting these rights. Learning from their stewardship and safeguarding their land and human rights is crucial to halting and reversing nature loss. Companies must begin to understand the role they play in engaging and supporting Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities and affected stakeholders as they identify and assess their own nature-related issues. Last year, we published the following guidance to help organisations better understand who to engage with, how to align with due diligence standards, and how to prepare, design, and conduct effective engagement: 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 👉 https://ow.ly/hBj050STIHX This approach shows how high-quality engagement helps organisations to reach a fuller understanding of nature related issues, manage these issues effectively and establish relationships of trust based on transparency and mutual respect. Given that meaningful engagement is a continuous process, this will serve the organisation well over the medium and long-term. #TNFD #Nature #IndigenousPeoples #IPLCs #IndigenousPeoplesDay https://ow.ly/FxEG50SUjiC https://ow.ly/WHbl50SUjj8 https://ow.ly/zOyw50SUjjQ

Although some companies are helping to halt and reverse #biodiversity loss, the majority do not yet fully understand how they impact and depend on nature, according to the World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA). The WBA has updated its Nature Benchmark, assessing how more than 800 major companies across various sectors including household products, apparel, mining, and food are impacting #nature and protecting and restoring #ecosystems. Five key findings: 1️⃣ Nature blind spot: only 5% of companies assess their #impact, and less than 1% understand #dependencies The landscape is rapidly changing – the #CSRD will require many large businesses to disclose their #material sustainability impacts and dependencies from 2025. Regardless of their regulatory requirements, all companies should adopt a risk management and disclosure framework such as the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). 2️⃣ Companies overwhelmingly disregard Indigenous Peoples’ rights To carry out projects with the potential to affect IPLCs, companies must commit to obtaining Free, Prior and Informed Consent (#FPIC) from them to ensure their agency in the future of their territories. The industries where companies were most likely to provide information about how they obtained FPIC were Tyres & Rubber (21%), Paper & Forest (17%) and Metals & Mining (14%). 3️⃣ As #water insecurity rises, companies must accelerate their water stewardship The Ceres Corporate Expectations for Valuing Water and Science Based Targets Network Freshwater Targets provide comprehensive guides and expectations for water stewardship for companies. 4️⃣ High risk of #greenwashing on #plastic, as companies struggle to back up efforts with data 5️⃣ Increasing board accountability: more leadership needed at the top To enable impact, companies should prioritise developing a #sustainabilitystrategy that covers nature, supported by concrete high-level responsibility and accountability for delivering the strategy. #sustainabilityreporting #esrs

  • 📊 Support the development of the TNFD Tools Catalogue Over the past three years, the TNFD has been exploring the various data-related challenges and solutions in corporate assessment and reporting of nature-related issues. To meet the market demand for addressing these challenges, the Nature-related Data Catalyst was established, and the TNFD Tools Catalogue was developed. The catalogue lists over 180 tools available today to support the assessment and reporting of nature-related issues. 🔎 Tools Catalogue - https://ow.ly/R0Oa50SSicy ✅ Complete survey - https://ow.ly/3Q3N50SSicx To inform the ongoing development of the Tools Catalogue's usability and functionalities, we are inviting both end users and tool providers to complete this survey by 30 August. The availability of accurate, comparable and decision-useful nature-related data is an essential pre-requisite to address the global challenge of accelerating nature loss.
