If ending poverty and homelessness for our nation's 37.9 million poverty stricken Americans was a national priority, don't you think we as a nation would have figured out how to do so by now? Think about it for a minute. We as a nation, have figured out how to find the expertise, resources, and billions to explore inner and outer space, research and cure rare diseases, and create and fund the world's finest military. Yet, we can't figure out how to end poverty and homelessness in America? Why? Grant it, the above mentioned national priorities create jobs, and are good for our economy but so would ending poverty and homelessness in America. There're good organizations out there trying to stem the tide of this financial and medical onslaught that our most vulnerable citizens find themselves in. But the hard question that needs to be asked is. Is it enough to get the job done, and is it sustainable? Choose Charities Corp believes it's just a matter of changing our national priorities, and a nationwide change of heart, mind, and soul. The truth of the matter is, we know it's the right thing to do to end poverty and homelessness for our nation's 37.9 million poverty stricken Americans. The hard part is doing it, right? Many of the critics and naysayers will tell you it can't be done because we don't have the resources, expertise or billions it'll take, to do so. If that's the case. Why is it, we as a nation have the resources, expertise, and billions to explore inner and outer space, research and cure rare diseases, and create and fund the finest military in the world. Yet, we as a nation, can't find the resources, expertise, and billions to end poverty and homelessness in America? Really? Come on! The truth of the matter is, ending poverty and homelessness in America is not a resource, expertise or money issue. It's a priorities issue! The truth of the matter is, we know it's the right thing to do. The hard part is doing it because of our nationwide financial, philanthropic, social, and political priorities. After taking a six-book detour to read some Dune books (only 17 left to go), I decided to get back into some nonfiction reads (thanks to a trip to the Tacoma Public Library). I started off with Poverty, By America by Matthew Desmond. Poverty was added to my reading list based partly on the author (I had previously read Evicted by Desmond) and as part of my effort to increase my knowledge around community-centric fundraising. This was - and I mean this in the best possible way - a tough read. Not because it was difficult to understand, but because it was so clear. Desmond casts poverty in America not as a result of poorly-constructed systems - but the natural and expected byproduct of systems. In other words, it's not a bug - it's a feature. The book calls into question not just the systems that keep poor communities from gaining traction, but our collective complicity in benefiting from these systems. Like I said, a tough read (but that's a good thing). From a nonprofit perspective, Desmond brings up the scarcity mindset -- a thorn in the side of most nonprofits -- as one of the tools used to derail or stop possible anti-poverty solutions: "Or consider how a scarcity mindset frames so much of our politics, crippling our imaginations and stunting our moral ambitions. How many times have we heard legislators and academics and pundits begin their remarks with the phrase 'in a world of scarce resources ...,' as if that state of affairs were self-evident, obvious, and unassailable as natural law, instead of something we've fashioned?" There's a lot to unpack and to consider here - about how we organize to fight poverty and how we talk about this fight with our colleagues and donors. Have you read this book? Self-assessment & Thinking Outside the Box I always reflect on my work, and think of an efficient, creative way to solve a problem. In July 2012, I founded a nonprofit STEP (https://lnkd.in/dnHYPd9 )and started working on UN's second sustainable development goal i.e Zero Hunger. After doing this for two consecutive years, I thought a better solution to poverty would be to provide interest-free capital to poor people to help them start/expand small businesses i.e instead of giving them a fish, teach them and give them resources to catch their own fish. The program has been a success and it continues to break the vicious cycle of poverty and empower hundreds of families. Ending systemic racism requires a multifaceted approach that addresses both institutional structures and societal attitudes. Here are some key strategies: 1. Implementing policies that address systemic inequalities in areas such as education, employment, housing, and criminal justice. 2. Promoting understanding of the historical roots and ongoing impacts of systemic racism through education and public awareness campaigns. 3. Addressing unconscious biases and prejudices within institutions and individuals through diversity training, implicit bias awareness programs, and promoting diversity in leadership positions. 4. Addressing disparities in healthcare access and outcomes by investing in underserved communities, improving access to healthcare services, and addressing social determinants of health. 5. Creating economic opportunities for marginalized communities through initiatives such as affordable housing programs, small business support, and equitable economic policies.
