TL: DR - Food trucks are coming to the streets of downtown Portland! Yesterday marked a significant milestone! City Council voted unanimously to approve a pilot project I have been championing! It is no secret that getting downtown Portland back on its feet has been, and will continue to be, an all-hands task that demands both commitment, as well as creativity. For my part, I am beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to engage the help of a community that has contributed so much to my own personal development; Portland's food truck community! In short - anyone, public or private can work with PBOT to bring food trucks to their block for a few hours a day! The substance of this pilot project comes down to two key elements: 1. City Code Transformation: Pulls back sections of City Code, making it legal for us to allow food trucks to vend right on the street (as opposed to in a private lot). 2. Healthy Business Program Expansion: Expands on the Healthy Business Program (the program responsible for all the amazing street seating we see at restaurants across Portland) allowing us to build a scaffolding of permitting and support for both food truck owners, as well as anyone in the central city (public or private) who may want to host a food truck. This Pilot is all about activating our public and privately owned spaces (Portland Parks & Recreation collab anyone?), supporting our local food truck owners - a quintessentially Portland group of small business entrepreneurs, and working towards bringing more people downtown. What alternative exists to organize for impact? This study unpacks the workings of a consumer co-op model, and explores the challenges a local food co-op must navigate to survive. The case study helps to discuss, among other things, the reciprocal relationships and resilience implications of such organizing model. Great to work with Ethan S. and Wren Montgomery on this case and looking forward to integrating to my teaching.

This week, we’re featuring the case "Charting a New Future for London Food Co-op," co-authored by Ethan S., Wren Montgomery, and Jury Gualandris. It focuses on the London Food Co-op in London, Ontario, Canada, as it faced declining sales, low membership, and a lack of community awareness following the pandemic, threatening its financial viability. "This case combines many of my interests, exploring the intersection between co-operative business models and local, sustainable food systems. It situates a local, community-driven business in the neighbourhood that it serves, with its own unique identity, strengths, and challenges," said Ethan. "The co-op is by community, for community. The relational dynamics between business and community are what I hope students and instructors will explore as they move through this case together." The coauthor added, "What motivated me to write this case was my desire to shine a light on alternative ways of doing business that students may not be familiar with." The Missed Opportunity of Connaught Village: A Call for Change As we start to work more in the charming yet underwhelming Connaught Village, a pressing conversation needs to be brought to the forefront. Inspired by Dylan Jones' insightful article from 26 February 2024, it's clear that the vision to transform the Connaught Village neighbourhood into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly space akin to the elegance of Marylebone High Street, remains unfulfilled. The Church Commissioners' endeavour to replicate such a model has, unfortunately, not seen the success we all hoped for. Connaught Village, despite its potential and notable residents, struggles with a lack of variety, hosting an array of overpriced essentials and a saturation of similar dining experiences. The closure of local cafes and restaurants highlights a trend of decline, a far cry from the bustling, diverse high street we envision. Marylebone High Street's charm is not just in its assortment of boutiques, cafes, and local shops but in the careful planning and management by The Howard de Walden Estate. Their strategy fosters a welcoming environment that benefits locals, Londoners, and tourists alike. This contrast starkly with Connaught Village's current state, where even the management's online presence seems disorganised and outdated. It's disheartening to observe the lack of initiative from the Church Commissioners, especially considering their substantial resources and land ownership. As we delve deeper into this neighbourhood, it becomes evident that more can be done to cultivate a space that champions local businesses, enhances pedestrian accessibility, and truly reflects the community's needs and desires. This call to action is not just about improving retail diversity or dining options; it's about recognising and seizing the opportunity to enhance our neighbourhood's fabric. Let's strive for a Connaught Village that embodies the spirit of community, diversity, and pedestrian-friendliness, making it a true asset to London's landscape. Small businesses play a vital role in Ireland's economic landscape, making substantial contributions to the overall economy. The recent cost hikes appear to lack thorough consideration, highlighting a lack of understanding among decision-makers regarding business dynamics. It seems that small businesses are bracing themselves for a challenging path ahead, with only a select few expected to weather the storm.
