Employers no longer need to offer remote work. It’s a buyers market right now. If they need to fill a position…. They can write “We have job” in purple crayon and get 800 applicants. No joke. Attracting top talent is easy. Top talent has been laid off with the same zest as the people who’ve been dialing it in. Top talent is everywhere. Nothing makes sense anymore. We tell our clients to negotiate 1 or 2 work from home days when they get an offer. Sometimes they get it. When you have a line of people standing in line behind you who are willing to be on site 100% of the time…. You’ve lost your leverage. Smart employers have kept the option open. They know they get happier, more engaged, and more motivated staff when remote options are on the table. Seems like a no brainer. Cheers to any employer who cares about your need for balance, your family time, and your happiness. Ultimately they come out on top. #resumewriting #jobsearch #remote

Robynn Storey - my comment has nothing to do with your post. I just want to say: Thank you for being gracious and honest about the status of the workplace in general. BUT MOSTLY - personal to me only - THANK YOU FOR UPDATING YOUR PHOTO. Seriously. It looked so much like a former employer. 'Nuff said.

A. Why is it a buyers’ market when the US has a 3.9% unemployment rate ? (I’ll grant you Canada is a bit different at 6.1%). B. The Return to Office trend is much more nuanced. Many employers in fact support hybrid work (not full remote or full in-person) in order to get and keep talent. Leaders need to stop measuring “desk time” and start measuring productivity. Almost 10 years ago, I had someone sitting at a desk scrolling through Facebook and YouTube all day long…there was NO productivity (the individual refused to complete their work), but they were “at work.” Measuring how much time spent at a desk has no correlation for how much work is done. Assign the work, provide feedback and/or coaching (as needed). If they don’t meet the standard, then meet with them to understand what happened. That’s an effective way to measure productivity.

Statistics, when generalized, is misleading. Because not every field was actively firing people. And the market is saturated where companies still haven't recovered from the circumstances where they had to lay people off.

You've nailed it - it's just basic supply-demand economics. They can do whatever they want, halving salaries, doubling requirements, and insisting on 5 day on-site weeks. But you do know how a pendulum works ...

Great article. I, for one, don’t like working from home their are so many distractions that could get you written up or worse fired.

It's a transactional versus relational approach to people. That might be something to sus out when researching where one wants to work: what kind of leaders work there?

The need for balance continues as it relates to WFH. Employers need to understand that employees need flexibility. Employees need to recognize that many companies and people see benefit in being in the office, at least some of the time.

Robynn Storey I'm not sure what a "like" on this post is suppose to represent? Are we to agree that talent no longer has leverage or celebrate the benevolent employers who show care in a marketplace that supposedly no longer requires it? Either way, neither rings true from where I stand.

While the debate over remote work continues, it's clear that the real issue isn't just about location. What's most important is that employers focus on their employees' happiness and well-being. Those who care about work-life balance and foster a positive work environment ultimately attract and retain top talent.
