While we wholeheartedly agree with Zack Smith, the focus on retention should extend beyond nurses to the majority of healthcare employers. To keep nurses around, healthcare facilities should focus on job training and education for ALL Allied health workers and support staff—not just nurses. The issue: A lot of nurses are leaving the profession because they are overworked and over-extended from doing tasks that go beyond their roles. In addition to their own responsibilities, they're taking on the roles of medical assistants, patient care techs, and other entry-level jobs. But, it doesn't have to be this way. This week I was tagged in a post about opposing thoughts on the #nursestaffingcrisis, more specifically in the hospital setting. The 2 most common sides that I read and hear about are that there is either: 1. There are not enough nurses in the U.S. to fill all the hospital openings. 2. There are not enough nurses who are willing to work in current hospital conditions. I decided to do a very unscientific poll on IG to see what I would get in response. In 21 hours, 183 accounts voted, and this was the feedback. But in addition to this, there were some fantastic comments, one 🧵specifically by Patrick McMurray, MSN, RN. In his comments, he said: 💡 There is a shortage of nurses just not in the ways most people think. 💡 There is a shortage of experienced nurses for a healthy skills mix in units. 💡 There is a shortage of nurses with diverse background. 💡 There is a shortage of nurses who speak multiple languages. 💡 There is a shortage of nurses doing research. 💡 There is a shortage of nurse faculty. 💡 There is a shortage of nurses working in the community in the preventative health space. 💡 There is a shortage of nurses in rural communities. 💡There is a shortage of nurses in less affluent areas. I love social media polls because of this richness of side commentary. I appreciate Patrick and others who are so active in these conversations in spaces where nurses of all ages and backgrounds hang out online. One of the most under recognized healthcare roles are those of Nurses'. The nursing team do not get the recognition they deserve, as it is the aftercare that would determine the best patient outcomes, is it not? 5 reasons why you should hire a nurse for healthcare roles away from the bedside. 1. Work ethic Ever work a 12 hour shift with no breaks with an impossible to do list and still leave for the day on time (ish)? Nurses do. All. The. Time. So while I’m not saying to exploit your nurse workers, I am saying that (most) job descriptions that require a “fast paced environment” or on call or off hours don’t scare us. 2. Multi-task or single-task, as needed A hospital work day requires lots of plate balancing. But there are also plenty of times we have to be honed in on just one thing. Most of us can switch back and forth fluidly. 3. Loves a plan, can re-adjust when that plan explodes If we don’t plan out our day, we’re in trouble. But if we also can’t adjust, re-prioritize and re-plan when that day inevitably goes to hell, we’re also in trouble. So we do both. 4. Knows how to get your sweet, confused meemaw to take her meds …as well as lots of other ways to help scared, sick people—who are often also in terrible pain—feel safe enough to accept and receive treatment. 5. Can work alongside all kinds of people—even some of the smartest people in the world—and still hold their own snd contribute to the team There’s no comparison between nursing school and medical school/residency/fellowships etc. But we’re still co-workers with mutual goals and nurses have to be able to communicate effectively with folks who have spent nearly three decades of their lives in school and training, just as much as we have to communicate effectively with our patients. There are lots more reasons to hire a nurse into your non-bedside healthcare role, but here’s a good place to start! #nurse #healthcare #medical

Nurse practitioners are experiencing higher-than-average job growth and are one of the fastest-growing occupations in the nation. In the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ most recent report on the 20 fastest-growing occupations in the nation, nurse practitioner comes in at a tie for number one. While the 2024 Becker's Nurse Salary and Job satisfaction report showed an increase in nurse salaries of 2.6% since 2002, the survey also showed Workplace violence from patients, patients' family members, and even colleagues remain a pressing concern for nurses.
