The paving process moves along! We started the week strong by getting GAB down throughout the majority of our future pavement areas. If you are outside the construction industry, you may be wondering, what is GAB? What is its role in roads and parking lots? 💎 Graded Aggregate Base (GAB) is a crushed stone base material that is applied prior to asphalt. It is a combination of course and fine material that ranges in size, depending on the application. 💎 When you place GAB on a suitable subgrade and compact it properly, it provides the asphalt with an extremely stable base that allows the paved surface to hold up under a certain amount of traffic over time. 💎 If you are applying “heavy-duty” pavement, say for areas where truck traffic is expected to be high, you would apply a thicker layer of GAB and an extra layer of asphalt binder/topping to compensate for the increased traffic/load. So, just remember that when there is traffic due to road work slowing you down on your commute, it’s not as simple as just laying asphalt on dirt and moving on. There are a lot of moving parts and factors to consider, just like every other component of construction.
