This election season, media and campaign speeches have many believing that violence is on the rise. But the data tells a different story. In Nicholas Suplina's and my recent piece, we discuss how the federal government has contributed to 2.5-years-and-counting of declining gun homicides across the US. Through the first six months of 2024 alone, safer cities have meant 1,048 fewer gun homicides, 2,275 fewer gun injuries, and $838M in taxpayer savings. Post-COVID “returns to normal” likely played a big role in driving these trends down—but efforts like the American Rescue Plan, Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, and the formation of a White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention are establishing conditions under which these trends can last. The best response to tragedy is action. On October 25, 2023, tragedy struck Lewiston, Maine, when a man armed with an assault weapon killed 18 innocent people and scarred countless others. Following the horrific tragedy, @Brady joined Maine lawmakers and advocates in working tirelessly to pass legislation to prevent further acts of gun violence. While it wasn’t easy, ultimately elected officials listened to constituents and passed effective solutions that will save lives. Just recently two bills became law which: ☑️Expand Background checks to cover most gun sales ☑️Improve the state’s “yellow flag” law by allowing family members to petition for extreme risk protection orders ☑️Create injury and violence prevention programs ☑️Create a mandatory 72-hour waiting period for certain firearms Learn more about what Brady is doing to help communities across the country respond with action by visiting us at: https://lnkd.in/euRvSUZT

Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy has declared gun violence in America a public health crisis. Just as campaigns against smoking and traffic fatalities have saved countless lives, Dr. Murthy envisions a multipronged approach to curb gun deaths. His 32-page advisory outlines measures such as increasing funding for firearm violence prevention research; advising health workers to discuss firearm storage; and recommending safe storage laws, universal background checks, "red flag" laws, and an assault weapons ban. With gunshot wounds now surpassing car accidents as the leading cause of death for children and adolescents, and a disturbing rise in firearm suicides among young people, it’s crucial to act now. Dr. Murthy's call to action is clear: addressing gun violence with a comprehensive public health strategy is essential for the safety and well-being of our communities. Today's report on gun violence as a public health crisis is an important reminder that we can do a lot to reduce risk and increase safety nationwide through policy, campaigns, and implementation. In some of my presentations, I compare (now ridiculous) cigarette ads promoting smoking as good for your health with the firearm industry's push to have women (including domestic violence survivors) purchase firearms to prevent firearms violence. So pleased this is now available. https://lnkd.in/gpwNWQuH

Evolving your thinking is a sign of strength in leadership.
Because of the Parkland shooting, where my daughter Jaime was murdered, I have always said that I will speak to anyone who wants to do anything to reduce gun violence, even if it means that they will need to change their positions in order to do the right thing and save lives. @Tim_Walz changed and took a strong stand towards gun violence prevention. I stand strongly with him now. "Today, he is viewed as a model for Democratic politicians seeking to balance Second Amendment rights and public safety. And his N.R.A. report card now contains straight F’s." https://lnkd.in/eQc5QnPs

President Biden Releases Statement On Most Recent Shootings in Texas and Nevada This year alone, our nation has experienced more than 600 mass shootings, and approximately 40,000 deaths due to gun violence. This is not normal, and we can never let it become normal. For all the action we have taken since I’ve been President, the epidemic of gun violence we face demands that we do even more. But we cannot do more without Congress. Republican lawmakers must join with Democrats in Congress to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, pass a national red flag law, enact universal background checks, require the safe storage of guns, and advance other commonsense measures that will help stem the tide of gun violence. And together, we must do more to prevent more families, and more communities like Austin, San Antonio, and Las Vegas, from being ripped apart by gun violence.
