Students at the NIACC John V. Hanson Career Center in Forest City are headed back to class for the second semester. This year, these students have been getting hands-on work with the equipment they'll be using in the "real world." Did you know that 90% of Career and Technical Education (CTE) students from Iowa will stay in the state? That's just one reason it's important to us to support this education locally - so we don't lose our most valuable grads! Pritchard's was very proud to supply the career center with the RAM cab and chassis you'll see here, and we were even more proud to join so many other generous sponsors in making this project happen! This will help Hanson Career Center students be more prepared as they enter the workforce, as you'll hear from NIACC President Steve Schulz in this video. 23 students worked with the vehicle during the first semester. It's safe to say they learned a lot! "This vehicle is the 'Swiss Army Knife' of trucks, with its multiple bed/cargo options to take on the various jobs typically found in the building trades. Having what we need when we need it, keeping things organized, and being able to transport it all from job to job is a huge time-saving advantage to the class. Currently we are using the truck with the service body on it to haul tools and equipment back and forth to the job site. We plan on using the flat bed to haul materials and supplies to our job sites, and the refuse container will be utilized to remove waste during any demolition or site clean-up that we might participate in." - Tony, Instructor "The ease of use and versatility of the truck has greatly improved our productivity in safe material handling without the need for more manpower to move large objects. What's the answer to the lack of workforce in new construction? Construction has been faced with a dwindling workforce as older workers retire, and parents across the US have convinced their kids that a white collar job equals success. As kids who are strapped with staggering college debt will attest, maybe it's not worth it. One group in Minneapolis that is tackling the answer is Lake St Works.  Lake Street Works is a 12-month after-school workforce development program for 12th grade men & women of color from the lowest income communities of Minneapolis. We prepare students for:  1. Full-time employment with one of our many construction industry partners.  2. Paid pre-apprenticeship enrollment.   3. Post-secondary education, technical training, & certification.
