ICYMI - Noise a key concern for Mancunians buying or renting a property Our cities are getting noisier and people are becoming increasingly aware of the detrimental impacts on their mental and physical well-being. Investing in the fabric of UK’s buildings is critical to reducing the effect of noise pollution and creating the healthy homes necessary to significantly improve people’s lives. Getting the insulation, materials, and design choices of a house right are important decisions that can improve people’s quality of life, reducing not only noise pollution but also improving warmth, comfort and fire safety. At ROCKWOOL UK, we want to understand just how much noise is impacting UK citizens and raise awareness of the available solutions such as installing insulation with good acoustic performance as part of any new build or retrofit work. That’s why we polled residents across Greater Manchester’s ten districts – to find out the level that urban inhabitants are affected by unwanted external noise. We found that noise is impacting everything from property choices to health and well-being, with over half of those polled raising concerns about increased stress, anxiety, and depression as a result of noise pollution. Ensuring the new National Model Design Code, and the building regulations, take action on noise in our homes would be a big step to making sure the right materials are used in future developments. To find out more about our research and our work to address noise abatement in cities across the UK, check out the link below: https://lnkd.in/gJAkAgeK

I think it's important to highlight some issues that are specific to buildings in Israel compared to northern countries: 1. The need for constant air conditioning/heating of indoor spaces during both winter and summer. Israel has a subtropical and Mediterranean climate characterized by hot and dry summers and relatively mild winters. High summer temperatures and minimal day-to-night temperature fluctuations can make indoor spaces hot and require continuous air conditioning. Similarly, heating may be necessary in winter to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. 2. Lack of adequate ventilation in residential buildings. In many Israeli buildings, natural ventilation may be limited due to construction characteristics and room layouts. This can lead to issues with air circulation and humidity. Gaps in building structures such as windows and doors, along with insufficient ventilation, can contribute to elevated indoor humidity levels. 3. Presence of mold on interior walls of buildings. In coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea, where the climate is more humid than in northern regions, mold can become a problem. High humidity and limited ventilation create conditions conducive to mold growth on interior walls. Combating mold often involves mechanical removal and the use of chemical treatments to prevent its growth. These problems are of crucial importance in ensuring comfortable and healthy living conditions in buildings. Energy-efficient solutions, improved ventilation, and the use of moisture-resistant materials can help address these issues. Striving to reduce environmental impact and developing buildings that align with Israel's climatic characteristics will contribute to enhancing the quality of life for residents and improving the country's resilience in the face of climate change.

One of the primary advantages of undertaking such an endeavor is the significant increase in property value 📈. A newly installed top layer not only enhances the aesthetic appeal 🌟, giving the property a fresh and modern look that is visually pleasing, but it also offers improved energy efficiency 💡. This improvement in energy efficiency can lead to potential savings on utility bills 💰, as the property becomes better insulated and more capable of maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures without excessive use of heating or cooling systems. Furthermore, a newly installed top layer ensures better protection against the elements, such as rain 🌧️, wind 💨, snow ❄️, and harsh sunlight ☀️. This additional layer of protection contributes greatly to the overall longevity and structural integrity of the building, preventing common issues like leaks, drafts, and water damage that can deteriorate the property over time. By investing in this upgrade, property owners can also reduce the likelihood of costly repairs in the future, as the enhanced durability and resilience of the structure minimize the risk of damage from environmental factors. Additionally, this investment provides peace of mind 😌, knowing that the property is well-protected and maintained. The long-term financial benefits are substantial, as the need for frequent maintenance and unexpected repairs diminishes. This proactive approach to property management not only preserves the building's condition but also ensures that it remains a valuable asset for years to come, potentially increasing its market appeal and resale value 🏡. Moreover, the aesthetic improvements coupled with practical benefits make this upgrade a comprehensive enhancement, addressing both form and function. Property owners can enjoy the immediate visual transformation while reaping the rewards of reduced energy costs and increased durability. This multifaceted advantage underscores the wisdom of undertaking such an endeavor, making it a prudent and forward-thinking investment that aligns with both financial and lifestyle goals. #HomeImprovement #PropertyValue #EnergyEfficiency #SmartInvestment #PropertyMaintenance #EcoFriendly

It's getting hot in here - and not in a good way. 🥵 Thousands of Kiwis are overheating in their homes due to poor building design and inadequate heat management. Proper insulation doesn't just keep your home warm in winter—it also helps keep it cool in summer. By controlling the flow of air and heat in and out of your home, it makes for more comfortable living and saves you money on those energy bills. 💸 But the real secret to a cooler home? Thoughtful design. More tree coverage, better paint choices, and active ventilation can drastically lower indoor temperatures and save energy. Combine these with effective insulation and you’ve got a home that works with nature, not against it. Our Building Insulants Standard, which is currently under review, aims to tackle these issues by ensuring proper installation, reduced energy consumption, emissions of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) to indoor air, and more. We welcome your technical input on this, and our other draft standards (Paints and Flat and Long Steel products) which are under review until 21st February 2025. Please head over to our standards webpage, download a copy and send your comments to our Head of Standards, Dr Andrea E. - andrea@ecochoice.org.nz. https://lnkd.in/gAVG5UbU #GreenBuilding #SustainableDesign #BuildingInsulation #DesignForChange #SustainableLiving #CircularEconomy

As winters seem to get colder each year, staying warm at home has become more challenging. Here are some insights from recent readings: Firstly, Australian homes are getting bigger, which ironically cancels out gains in energy efficiency. Larger homes require more energy for heating, cooling, and general maintenance, leading to a larger carbon footprint. Additionally, many homes are poorly insulated and lack central heating, making them ineffective at retaining heat during winter. A historical focus on cooling over heating has left many homes ill-equipped for winter warmth. This can lead to discomfort and health issues during colder months. Moreover, many homes are so poorly insulated that they are more like tents than eco-friendly buildings. Current building standards do not prioritize energy efficiency and insulation, resulting in freezing indoor environments during winter. These insights make me think critically about our living spaces and the importance of sustainable and practical design, especially as we face changing weather patterns. Investing in better insulation and energy-efficient heating solutions could make a significant difference in our comfort and environmental impact. #Sustainability #HomeDesign #SustainableArchitecture #EnergyEfficiency

Today I want to talk about an area that doesn't get too much thought. When constructing apartment units with attached garages, it's crucial to ensure proper air sealing measures to safeguard indoor air quality and energy efficiency. Attached garages often harbor pollutants like carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other harmful emissions from vehicles and stored chemicals. Without adequate air barriers, these contaminants can seep into living spaces, posing serious health risks to residents. Effective air sealing between the garage and the apartment is a key strategy to prevent air leakage and the infiltration of pollutants. This involves sealing gaps, cracks, and joints in walls, ceilings, and floors where the garage adjoins the living areas. Not only does this safeguard indoor air quality, but it also enhances energy performance by reducing drafts and improving thermal insulation. We frequently have self-closing door mechanisms, weather-stripping, and door sweeps to make sure the door provides a nice, solid seal. The area that often gets overlooked is the wall itself, specifically wall cavities that have switches and outlets on either side causing a potentially easy leak path from the garage to the living environment. While this is of specific importance when you have a direct connection between an apartment unit and the garage, it can also be important for tuck under garages that connect directly to a conditioned corridor. Green building certifications like LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and NGBS (National Green Building Standard) emphasize the importance of indoor air quality and energy efficiency. Both programs recognize the critical role of proper air sealing in buildings. Achieving LEED or NGBS certification requires demonstrating that air sealing measures are in place, particularly in high-risk areas like attached garages. Incorporating these measures not only promotes sustainability but also creates healthier, more comfortable living environments for occupants—key objectives in green building initiatives. #GreenBuilding #LEED #NGBS #AirQuality #Sustainability #HealthyHomes #EnergyEfficiency
